You do realize that 20-50 weight oil is NOT the same as straight 50 weight oil. I have always run 20-50, lately Brad Penn oil (Now renamed to Penn/Grade) in my CJ with an AMC 360 in it. If I lived where 0* was common in the winter time it would be a different story.

Arguments are all over the place when it comes to oil. I like it thicker than some folks. My belief is that the thicker oils cushion the bearings better than the thin stuff. Others like thin oils because it moves faster through the engine removing heat and sludge more efficiently. Lumpy has a point, emotion plays a big roll in the oil discussion.

I also believe that oils have advanced quite a bit over the years. I remember when 10-40 was the hot ticket, everybody used it. Suddenly !0-40 is a no no. 10-30 is supposed to be better. Now 5-15 or one of the other light oils are preferred.
 
Ok oil guys and gals- quick question. AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6 professionally rebuilt 500 miles ago. Time to change the oil. What is the recommendation? I live in AZ- Phoenix metro area. Filter?

this is just me and you by no means have to take my advice as its just my two cents but i have run royal purple 10w-40 since i rebuilt my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . i find that royal purple (im sure there are others as well) is one of the few oils still on the market that still use zddp (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate) in their engine oil products. zddp has been an additive since the 1940s and our old engines were designed when this was still in use. most modern day cars are designed differently are designed to run ethanol fuels. although i find it almost impossible to find ethanol free fuel with certain oil brands i can still find a good oil with zddp still in it.
 
I'm a fan of either Valvoline or Delo 15/40 and Wix or Napa Gold filters.
 
One I get my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l running and installed I will be going with the Zinc also
