do es this Transfer Case use poppet ball & springs for 4 wheel drive shift levers ?? The ones I ve seen have plastic caps in holes?

Yes, The Dana 18 and the Dana 20 take a poppet ball & spring to detent the shifting rods...........a set screw or bolt holds them in place.

The plastic plugs are acess holes to drop the ball and spring in, push them down and the shift rod actually hols them in. The plastic plugs can have a ball switch for a four wheel drive light on the dash.
The springs can collapse or get sticky.
