Does anyone know if the Dana 300 is synchronized and capable of engaging and disengaging while running? I have a twin stick and have tried engaging both front and rear axles while running and get that grinding sound that you should never hear. When stopped both axles engage with no problem. Thanks in advance for your help.

4HI you can engage running but 4LO you can't.

Thanks mtnwlr, I’ll give it a try tomorrow. Just finished putting in front chromoly axles today. Still debating the auto tranny, kinda leaning toward keeping my t18a for now. Appreciate you input my friend.

There are no synchronizes in the Dana 300 . Are you trying to shift to 4H while moving with the hubs locked or unlocked? With unlocked hubs, it will grind but with the hubs unlocked you should be able to shift in and out of 4H while moving, at least as slow speeds, with no problems. My Dana 20 shifts in and out of 4H smoothly at least up to 25-30mph. Haven't tried any faster than that.

Thanks to all you guys for your input. While wheeling and rock/hill climbing, I’ve tried staying in locked hub, 4low. But after installing the spartan auto lockers, turning radius became severely reduced causing a lot of backing up and turning. So I’m thinking, because of my set up, T-18 with granny low, 4.56 gears and 35’s, I might need to run around trails and most minor hills in 2high and shift front axle in only on the bigger hills and using 4low only on the most extreme rocky hills. That was the reason for my question about shifting front axle in and out on the fly. Thanks again for any driving suggestions you might also have.

You said you are twin sticked, so would running 2L help out? I use it alot on easy, but hilly sections of trails. It keeps me from having to shift so much, especially in and out of granny gear. In fact, I ride a lot of the trail in low range, 3rd or 4th gear, but I'm not geared as low as you (T-18 and 35s but with a 2.46 low range and 4.10 axles). With my twin stick Dana 20 , I can also shift the front axle in and out while in low range with no issue as long as the Transmission is in N or clutch is disengaged.
