Hey guys, I've got an issue. My spedo cable shredded itself on the tranny side. And now there is a piece stuck in the Transfer Case where the speedo gear plugs into it. I've tried a magnet(stron rare earth one) tried fishing it out with a pick. And niw I've tried to remove the part that the cable threads on so i could tap it out. Unfortunately it rounded of on me and still didn't come loose.

I've had to take the Transfer Case off anyhow because i had to reuild the tranny. About the only way i see to get this off the tranny is by mangling it with a vice grip. So i tried my google-fu out to see how much a new one would cost. Well i have failed. I can't. Find that part listed any where. I've seen every other part for this thing on line. But not that piece. I've even seen it on exploded views with no #s.

I need one of these badly so i can get the jeep back up. Any one know where to get one? Or any one have a spare off of a parts Transfer Case that they wouldn't mind parting with? Or posibly know of a resoably priced speedo that gets it's signal elsewhere so i have a work around? Thanks!

A few pictures would sure help.

these are just images i snagged of of google but they show what i'm talking about. btw i've seen images while looking for these where the tail shaft housing has a different style of connector for the speedo. is there a way to just swap out to this style if i can't find a way to replace this part??

You have an early Dana 300 , specifically 1980.
Or someone has put that 1980 short housing on a later Dana 300 .
That style uses Dana 20 Transfer Case speedometer gears and parts.
That gear retainer/cable adapter is very common. I've probably got 20 of them.
Search Dana 18/Dana 20 and you'll find it.

The later style is the type held in with the large clip in your other photos.

The problem for you is to get it out.
7/8" thin wall socket usually works.
If the corners are all rounded off, then time to be creative.
But don't break the housing......

thank you so much for that info!! i've been beating my head off the wall trying to figure this out and find one.

i had a 7/8ths socket on it. but it just barely found purchase on the gear retainer. and one good omph and a slip off and now it's rounded off enough that the wrench won't even try. so if i can buy another one i can lock some vice grips on it and work it off that way and maybe a little heat to help it out. i just didn't want to screw it up if i couldn't replace it.

Riser-Were you using a 6-point socket? 12-point is NOT what I would use here.

Ok I've been searching all day on the net for this thing and i can't find one anywhere! Apparently it's full name is a speedometer driven gear sleeve . I can find spedo gears, the gears inside the Transfer Case , the newer set up in many configurations, the tail shaft housings even! But not this one! Not the one i need! If you know where to buy one please link me to it.

Where these pretty much universal on any old Transmission ? Or were these pretty much specific to the Transmission or Transfer Case they were on?

Or hagar if you would be willing to part with one of yours let me know what you would want for one. I need to get this jeep back on the road soon.

And lumpy i did use a six point. Since i could get so little purcase on the nut face i wanted as much surface area touching as possible. But the case rocked(not in the jeep) and i slipped with it and now it's pretty fubar.

You might try this-Grind()the opening of the socket completely flat. So there's no taper at all, at inside of the mouth of the socket. The socket will have full grip of the hex.
This has work'd for me in the past.......

You need to get your old one off first.
The early versions don't have a seal in them and are used with gears that have the reverse spiral grooves on the shaft.
Later ones are recessed for and have a seal and are used with driven gears that have a smooth shaft, no spiral grooves.

Yes I can furnish whichever one you need.

:notworthy: Very kind of you to do this. :chug:

This what you're looking for?
'81-'86 CJ Speedo Drive Pinion Adapter

That won't work with the short type of rear housing that he has.

Any progress made on getting the adapter out?

Sorry i kinda fell off the earth there. My other truck(the only one we have running) evidently got jealous of the jeep being able take some time off and it tried to self destruct. So i had to jump on that this last weekend. I got to work on the tranny yesterday and finally got the spedo adaptor out.

Sadly it took a vice grip and a 4lbs slede to get it to move so the threads that the spedo cable goes on are toast. I did get the section of cable out of the gear though. So silver lining. My wife has the pics of the adapter on her phone at work with her. So as soon as i get those I'll edit this post and put them up.

here's the pics of the one that i have.

Hagar would you still be abke to help me out with one?

Yes.
I can't tell exactly from the photo.
Do you need an adapter that has the seal inside ?
I have it either way, just need to know.
Send me your shipping info in a PM and we'll get the ball rolling.

There was no seal on it when i pulled it out.

Did you receive it ?
