Distributor And Coil Advice Needed

Distributor And Coil Advice Needed
Check out the Team Rush Sticky thread in the above section. Everything you could possibly want or need is there.

I purchased my HEI from Bulltear and used their "matched set" dizy gears simple.

If I ever tear my 360 down that far ..... maybe at my next water pump replacement, I just might do a matched gear change and a gear chain/sprocket replacement. The peace of mind would be welcome.

There are other very decent HEI conversions out there, but this is a bit of an anti HEI thread I didn't want to get into that.

When I put in my DUI I did look into the Ford conversion with an MSD brain box. After talking to a guy who worked with a race team who ran the MSD box I had second thoughts. It is very possible that the MSD box is more reliable now, but his team ran 2 MSD boxes with a switch set-up. When the first box quit the driver could switch to the second box and finish the race.

Not sure this is an anti-HEI thread...here's why - the TeamRush page has multiple options for the Prestolite's and one of them IS an HEI ran through a Motorcraft distributor. That's what I have on mine and TeamRush is the guy who installed it for me in my garage.

I have my stock coil in place and replaced my old ignition module on the fender from the Prestolite setup with an HEI module and some wiring changes. No MSD box at this point. I could tell the difference when I started it up, and even more when I touched the accelerator. It is THAT noticeable.

Again, there's more than one way to go about this and for all the people who have an HEI like you do - that's totally fine. No one should be bashing one improvement over another improvement if they're truly both improvements.

Agreed, both are obvious improvements. I've never run my 360 with anything else so I really don't know how it compares to the stock unit or the Team Rush mod either, but I do know this, my 360 starts with authority, like no other jeep or older vehicle I've ever had. With that being said I do understand the fear many have of timing gear issues and I believe there lies the real strength of the Team Rush conversion that uses stock parts.

Agreed. He's become a pretty good friend of mine. I'm extremely fortunate that I work in the town that he lives in

Dan77CJ7 - In point of fact there might have been dyno numbers generated by someone to show the difference between various distributors.

"Seat of the pants" fell can be extremely deceiving. For instance H-D drivers will put shorty mufflers on their bikes and swear all day that their bikes are faster/better. But when tested on a dyno they find that the bike is producing only a portion of the HP they were before changing mufflers. Biker magazines are full of such examples. Seat of the pants testing can be deceiving is all I'm saying.

I put the DUI version of the HEI ignition on my jeep because I needed a new ignition system and like the clean looks of the DUI system. With all this discussion of one system being better than the other I don't see where anybody (maybe somebody did) ran one, then changed it out for the other. I like my DUI dist. It's neat and clean, all of it makes sense to me, big cap, built in coil for a direct shot of electricity to the plug wires, solid well built easy to find module, to keep it safe I'm running the factory gear. Only one small problem with interference with the power steering pump, but no big deal. Simply stated, I won't be changing it out for something else any time soon.

That's not saying that there is anything wrong with the Team Rush system. I'm sure everything they are saying is true. Sure there is a lot of wiring and extra boxes here and there which is something that doesn't impress me much, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is a far better system than the one AMC installed, but the DUI HEI system is also a far better system. By the way, please don't separate the DUI out and include ALL the cheap distributors in what I'm writing, I know NOTHING about the cheaper systems except for what has been written here in this forum. Even here, after changing the gear out, some have had good luck with the cheap E-bay systems. Don't be fooled, I bet quite a few team rush parts passed through China as well.

Fooled? whos fooled?:o

throw backkk.... http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f2/dui-distributor-10975/index2.html

Just keep in mind that the AMC V8 is VERY picky about mixing and matching distributor gears. FAR more than other engine designs. Two options are to change both gears with a matched set or reuse the original factory gear on your replacement distributor.

I'm a HEI guy - coil, cap, brains and advance in one impressive looking package. A nice clean one wire install rather than a bit of a rats nest .... no that would be an overly dramatic description of the Ford conversion. For that conversion look at the Team Rush conversion threads.

dramatic? LOL:chug: cosmetics over performance? Get with the program! LOL

Not cosmetics really, I like the simplicity of one wire going in and 8 spark plug wires going out. To my eye the whole thing looks engineered rather than put together.

...... Sorry guys, but I'm done here. I really wasn't looking to argue in the way I have done here. When it comes to customizing where a lot of electronics are concerned I get nervous and untrusting of my own skills. While others thrive on it, the very idea of "Performance Tuning" an ignition system or a fuel injection system simply makes me uncomfortable.

You dont have to be done friend, I never meant to make you uncomfortable. My fault i though we were have an adult conversation Via the interwebs trying to find a common ground< never did i want to seem like i was bashing DUI, most of my post a state i like MY DUI set-up, just think i can do better. if it helps IM not FI guy, those things SUCK!

Dan - not to worry, I understood your intent, but I felt that I was becoming to intense, maybe pounding the drum too hard, possibly alienating someone in the process.

HH-Baby steps.
Been down the road you speak of. Teamrush walk'd(held my hand:notworthy:)me through it.
Still runs great today and with the MSD ign bx also.

Hey - when TeamRush put mine on :notworthy:, I just handed him this and handed him that. Ignition electronics are NOT my strong suit whatsoever.

In fact, he and I plan to actually undo my ignition next month  - then re-do it with step-by-step write ups and photos and videos, as it can be daunting for those like me who don't feel comfortable with it. :D

007-That would be GREAT! :notworthy:

That would be great, but I do have a suggestion. Please don't have a picture or a bunch of pictures of a pile of wires going here and there with a hand holding a wire cutter obviously snipping extra wires away. No .. no .. no .. It's like lookin' a monster right in the eye, for me that's an almost instant page turner.

....Don't get me wrong though, I'm not afraid of wiring things ... electric guitars, no problem .... behind the dash, a couple beers and no problem .... installing a radio .... no problem .... working on a wild bunch of struggling wires going on under the hood, No there simply aren't enough beers, well there could be, but standing and holding a wire cutter would not be possible..... :)

Agreed Hedge. The pictures will have arrows and drawings. I'm like you so I want something that even I could follow.
