E-brake replacement

(would like to begin with apology if this is in the wrong section. The e-brake cable did not seem to fit anywhere else)

I just acquired a 1980 CJ5 in pretty good working order with some minor immediate issues. This will be my first foray into the mechanical world (aside from "get it back to the trail head" fixes. One of the immediate fixes however is the e-brake and I can't seem to find any information on how to replace it. Can any of you point me somewhere that may help?

Sorry. PO said the cable needs replacing and even gave me the replacement. However my LT makes it sound as if replacing it is going to be a huge task so was looking for diagrams or better yet pics of a previouse install.

All I know is that it does not work at all.

There's a couple of different pieces to the system so I was asking to clarify. Did you have some information to share to help out?

My Jeep came without E-brake components. Jeeps have 3 cables. The front cable goes from the E-brake peddle to a saddle device that separates the cable into two, one for each wheel. You need to pull the drum and check to see if you have E-brake guts inside the rear brake drum.

Non of it is difficult. It can be dirty work though. Also, the cables are expensive. My three cost almost $AMC 150 . The brake guts cost ~$90.

Here's a picture of where the 2 rear and the cable from the peddle meet on a CJ7 . Likely the same. Driver side for a reference.

Didn't realize it was 3 parts to the same component!

The part he gave me appears to be the "front cable" that connects to the pedal. However I traced it real quick last night while I was "walking the dog" and that part seems to be in working order. So I will move to the drum once I have a bit more time.

I am just not sure I like relying solely on leaving it in gear to keep it from rolling unattended. But if they didn't even come with components it must not be to bad on it.

It's funny how different people view different things. Today using the E-brake is quite common. Back when I was a kid we lived in snow country and my dad would have a fit everytime I touched the E-brake. He'd say, "Do you want the brakes to freeze up?" We never used it and even though I live in the Desert SW, I'm still nervous about touching it. Leaving a vehicle in gear, especially reverse has always worked for me. But I know quite a few people who use their E-brake with an automatic.

That helps a ton! a lot easier to trace the line with the tub pulled.

Mine is currently a landscaping edger. PO removed mine as well. I assume it quit working at some point. Don't even have the pedal. Not sure what is in the rear drum.
