Early cj, 5.38's not low enough

Early cj, 5.38's not low enough
Alright, I won't keep my hopes up. But I'll see what the man has to say when he calls back. Is the price reasonable at least?

:)A good Ford T-18 with a short adapter & short input shaft.........easy $500.00-$700.00 in good condition. A Dana 20 $200-$300 in good condition.

Good meaning ready to run..........not needing a rebuild.
:D:D:D:D

So what you're saying is, just buy it and figure out how to use it later? :D
as long as they are good to go...

:)Again if the stuff is a Ford T-18 (on the side of the case casting number (#13-01) and it has both the short input shaft (about 6.5" stickout) and the 1" adapter between the tranny & TC and has the 6:32 low gear and doesn't need rebuilding that's a good deal. Buy It!

Its an amc T-18 with the low first, 6.34 to 1. Still decent way to to?

:)First off there all Borg Warners..........the problem with the Jeep version is the numerous configurations that were built. Normally the input shaft is to long. Most I have seen are that way and changing the input shaft is possible if you can find the correct parts but none are still being made............if it is the longer version it still can be used but in a short wheelbase Jeep the rear drive shaft can become to short......... most input shafts on standard bell housings are about 6-7 inches without any adapters. Check this one out and post a picture.

Talked with him again, he said he'll measure it. I think previously he said the input shaft was around 6". I still have my amc 360, which is what this setup came off of I guess, and was in a cj. It has the 1" adapter between the tcase and Transmission . Ugh, I didn't want a v8 under the hood of this little jeep. Might be the easiest and cheapest for me to get a decent gear ratio though.

Later CJ5 's came with V8's so it should be ok.

Buying the correct CJ-version T-18 is going to be costly if they know what they have. There is a matched CJ T-18 /Dana 20 set for sale near me right now for $700. The FSJ version of the T-18 is much cheaper but has the long input. Fitting that into an early CJ would leave you with a very very short rear driveshaft... D20s go for about $100-$AMC 150 around here in usable condition. They are about the only thing left after the rust is done eating... :D If I was buying a Transfer Case and an adapter I would go for a Dana 300 though. You could get a new adapter and the Transfer Case for the $700-$800 range with some careful shopping. Bought my last Dana 300 in usable condition for $200 but they usually go for about $300 here. Ford T-18 's are also cheaper here: maybe $AMC 150 .

Here is a great combo but pretty far from you:
T18 and 300 combo - C.O.R.E. FORUM
CJ T-18 adapted to Dana 300 via novak with bell-housing and shifters. $1000- but you would be hard pressed to duplicate it for that price. If there is one near me there will be one near you sooner or later... :(

Sounds like this T-18 /Dana 20 is the correct cj setup. I'll probably go this route and work on getting my 360 ready to drop in. Maybe this winter.

Also I did the math on the ratios. My current setup is a t90a, d18, 5.83's. 2.79 x 2.46 x 5.38 = 39.9 final low range drive. If I went to the T-18 , Dana 20 , and even with 3.73's I'll have 6.32 x 2.03 x 3.73 = 47.9 final drive. I plan to run 4.10's up to 4.56's though. Then I might do the Dana 20 bronco gear swap to get 2.46 low range gears again, longer run though.
