Hello fellow cj owners,

I am pretty new to working on jeeps (or any car) and am currently pretty stumped. My Jeep has been sitting for a little over a year without being started. I put a new battery in and fresh fuel and tried to start it. As expected it didn’t start right up. Long story short I may have gotten a little carried away with cranking it and fried the starter solenoid( the little stream of smoke made it easy to identify).
I replaced it but now nothing happens when I turn the key. (duralast F496)
-I have checked all the fuses in the fuse panel under the dash
-I have confirmed it’s grounded to the fender.
-battery reads 14.2V (and had it load tested to be safe)
- “I” terminal and “S” terminal both read 0V with ignition is on run
-when I turn the key to start the “I” terminal reads 7.65V and the “S” reads 0V
-The large terminal that goes to the starter still reads 0V

My best guess at this point is that either the ignition or ignition switch is bad. Does anyone know what the terminals are meant to read on a functioning starter solenoid? Do you guys think it could be the ignition switch?

Sorry if this post is long I tried to provide enough detail.

There should be two red colored fusible links connected to the battery terminal on the starter relay. One goes to the ignition switch and the other to the alternator. If you can pull and stretch any of the two that would indicate an issue, it should be checked out. My thinking is it could be the one that powers the ignition switch. Welcome to the forum.

I finally got back out to the shed today to have another attempt at getting the jeep to crank. The fuseable links seem ok. I think my next step will be to replace the ignition switch on the steering column. thank you for your help

You may want to replace the starter soleniod again. Mine went out last year and the first replacement from Napa didnt work either. Its easier to try than changing the ignition switch.

How old is the current battery, you said tested OK?
Do try another known good battery.
Make sure your battery GND(-)lead is mounted to the top mounting bolt of the starter.
Make sure battery terminals are clean.

Use a jumper wire and jump across the solenoid to crank the engine.
Even a screwdriver would work just to test with.
