Eletric Fan

They are noisy and you may well need to install a higher AMP output alternator.
May I ask, why you want to change over?
LG

Lumpy is right about the alternator. You will need to change out your 63 amp 10si for at least a 12si. Or the first night out you will have to make a choice between head lights or a cool engine.

GB-Don't think the Cj's came with a 63AMP alt.
Mine sure didn't, and it had the trailer tow pkg and such.
UPDATE-CK'n my notes, I'm wrong! :o:bang:

All the replacement (not upgrades) alternators are sold as 75-86 63 amp.

May not. That's what mine had when I bought it and it could not keep up with the cooling fan, heater, headlights, and ignition. I think the ford fans pull about 25 amps on high.

The standard CJ alternator is rated at 42 amps, the heavy duty optional alternator is rated at 55, 63, 70, and 85 amps. Like Pete mentioned most come 63 amps. LG you have the tow package with heavy duty alternator.

OK-CK'd my notes. Had the 70 amp as OEM. Replaced it about 12 yrs ago with one from NAPA, when the bearing went bad. The NAPA receipt sez 85 AMPS on it. Sorry to say-The ink on the receipt is faded so bad, that I can't see the PN#.
My SWAG-The 85 amp alternator was for the A/C equiped CJ models.

Hey LG, I recently reread an article in an old JP magazine and he was mentioning while stock alternators seem to have bearings on one end the Mean Green has bearing support on both ends of the shaft. I've not looked into this myself since the GM 10si is working fine for me right now.

Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique use the same type of dual fan so this'll broaden your horizons on finding one from the auto wrecking yards.

Some general wisdom regarding wirning, batteries and alternators can be found here; BASIC WIRING 101, Getting You Started! - JeepForum.com

another page that make for a good read; Proper Grounding locations for starter, alternator and dedicated ground buss - JeepForum.com

Since I've installed mine I've never looked back, I've got some wirning diagrams for this fan setup if you need, give me a holler.
