Engine keeps dying!

I've got an 82 CJ5 , straight V6. I've got it running, but it's been dying lately. It will start right up and the engine seems to run well, but I'll start driving it and after less then 5 minutes of driving it the engine just stops. I usually can restart it right away, but occasionally I can't get it started. If I let it sit for an hour it usually will start right up again. I had someone help me with some vacuum hoses a few months ago and I'm wondering if I have a pressure issue. I've looked at the hose diagrams on here and the links to other sites, but my hoses seem to be different. I'm stumped with what to do now. Does it sound like a venting problem or something else?

It takes fuel, air, and spark to keep it running. There is a possibility that there is trash in the carb which can be diagnosed by looking at the fuel filter for trash and the next time it stops you can grab the throttle while looking down the carb and you should see a stream of fuel squirting into the throat of the carb. If no fuel then you will probably need to flush the tank out and rebuild the carb.

Next time it dies you can also check for spark by pulling a plug wire a spark plug and hold the end near a piece of metal and look for a spark as you spin the engine over. no spark then you need to start looking at the ECU which could be getting hot and shutting down til it cools off or a heat saturated coil either one would need to be replaced.

This is some arm chair diagnosing as I dont know how many miles are on the engine something you can check now is a compression check, and leak down check looking for a cracked head or burned out valve seats which you would find more likely on a higher mileage motor. also look at the plugs while you are doing that to see if one is greyish white which would be radiator coolant being burnt in that cly.

You can track a vacuam leak by spraying the hoses down with carb cleaner if you have a leak the idle will increase when the carb cleaner is sucked in. Also spray the base of the carb sometimes the gasket leaks. hope this helps

Thanks for the quick reply. I've visually checked the fuel in the carburetor. Both jets seem to be working. The car will run when parked for long time. It only dies when I drive it. I had to replace the high pressure power steering line last week and pulled out the radiator and flushed and drained it then. I'm not sure how many miles are on the vehicle. I know it was rebuilt about 6 years ago and then parked and neglected for 3 years before I bought it. I'm going to guess there aren't many miles on it since the rebuild. I'll check the spark, I haven't done that. Thanks again for the help.Also, I put a new fuel filter on it a few weeks ago, because I thought it might not be getting fuel.

Also check your grounds on the engine, battery, dash and ECU if your jeep shakes its ground lose it will quit as you describe

How ya tell a "straight v6" from a "gay v6"?

You say it will run a long time just sitting, what happens when you throttle it up while sitting?

A straight 6 has all the plugs on one side a V6 looks like a V8 missing two plugs. And by the way it's not a "straight V6" it's one or the other.

I'll have to make sure I'm a little more awake when making a late night post.

What do you think is wrong with the carb?

When it starts after I give it a little gas it will idle easily for 5-10 minutes. The engine runs and sounds good when it throttles up and when you let off the gas it drops down to idling very easily.

Just take it apart and rebuild the whole jeep. Its inevitable.

Make sure you have clean tight ground connection on the body, frame and both heads.
