Engine runs after ignition off - HEI installed

OK, finished the HEI installation. Engine runs after ignition is cut off. I wired the HEI with a relay as described online using the trigger wire from the ICM - 10 gauge red/white stripe. Since the engine did not cut off I switched the trigger wire to the positive coil wire used on the original distributor, same issue.
I have read about the diode from radio shack part 276-1144 to prevent this issue. Can someone tell me where to install this diode? I assume it is wired into the red wire that is part of the 2 plug connector into the alternator?
I did pull this plug off the alternator after cutting off the ignition and motor still running, it cut off then so that should be my problem I hope. Thanks everyone,,,,,

diode goes on the smaller resistor wire on back of alternator it stops your alternator from back feeding electrical current. I had to do it to mine when I had an MSD box
