Impressive! I was just messing, I have always been partial to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 's myself. Such a quiet engine when it is all adjusted and maintained well. Very tough as someone said earlier. The 4.0 is a nice engine as well. Brother in law drove one for a year on factory oil in Austin traffic. It was only a quart low on oil! He drove it for 7 or 8 years after that with semi regular PM's too! He sold it with like180k on it!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

I will vote with you on the 440, oilfield job security! I like single digit fuel MPG's, makes the production bonuses look nice!

I have a 440 in my 73 Winnie I wanted to pull and install it in my CJ7 . I'm told it will not fit unless I do some major chopping to the engine area.

I don't think it would be a good fit for a CJ5 . Also, doing 75 mph may also not be a good thing.

I have a 4 banger myself. I bought a rebuilt AMC 304 since it's an AMC engine. I also plan to install my T-18 . Some other things you need to consider is one piece axles and such if you plan high torque...

I was going to say SBC or maybe even BBC, but I'll vote with you on the 440 since I build drilling rigs to pay the bills. :chug:

My Jeep gets about 100-AMC 150 feet per gallon when it's WOT...my truck is just barely in the double digits (12-14 mpg) since it's a Ram 2500... I hate seeing the price of gas go up, but on the other hand it's keeping me in business.

I'm in the camp of staying AMC. If big power is what you want get a 401 and T-18 . Chevy motors may be cheap but by the time you buy the adapters you should be money and time ahead sticking with an AMC.:chug: Just my .02.

Popotello that 440 is an easier swap than a sbc. A lot of people say it won't work or fit they are wrong.

Not a whole lot of info out there on it either. Lets exchange PM's and maybe get me thinking. Like I said the 440 is in my motorhome that has 56,000 on it. Motor runs like a bear and I think it would be cool to try and attempt a swap. I've also checked Novac to see about adapting the T-18 I have to the 440 and they don't have any adapters for Mopar that I could find.:(

On a side note I have an AMC 304 that is rebuilt but not complete. Needs a water pump, distributor and some other small odds and ends that will nickle me to death so I've taking it slow. I plan to sell the motorhome, but really want to pull the motor and scrap the camper as it needs a radiator and one is hard to come by. That's how I came up with the 440 idea...

Tinman, I just saw you info. Holy sheepers you have a 440 in your Cj!

Yes we need to talk...

Not really sure about the T-18 but autos are easy. It looks like a big block Chrysler bellhousing might be an option. As far as motor fitment goes the only mods are the mounts for the motor. Headers are off the shelf ramcharger. My auto swap put the Transfer Case back in the original holes and the valve covers clear by 1.5 on the pass side and 2.5 on the drivers. With headers and an alluminium intake weight gain was at ne'er zero compared too the six cyl pm if you want more info to digest.
