1979 CJ5, 304, completely rebuilding it.
So I will have more info hopefully soon, but found a guy with a 44 and a 60 for sale, I believe out of a YJ. I need to figure out what they are geared, but anyone have an idea of what these are going for right now/what they should be worth, assuming they are in good condition. I believe they are drum. Any info will be helpful, i.e. what to look for when I go take a look since I am not terribly familiar with these axles.

Thanks

I would say the "Worth" can vary quite a bit depending on the set up and condition...

Keep in mind:

1> the gear size in there and what gearing you want. If past the cut off (If it has real high gearing, and you want low gearing) you'll need a new carrier and gears are not cheap.
2> Is anything "rigged"? Welded front etc.
3> inspect the gears if you can, look at the wear and set up.
4> are the offsets right for your current rig?
5> and signs of leakage?

Also the over all width, etc.

As far as pricing, I'd have no good estimate for you... :(

i guess everyone's "worth rate" varies, but for me it depends how much work would be involved in getting to the point that i would want them, labor, parts, time.....

I appreciate the info. I will hopefully check them out this week before I head to Florida for 10 days. I figured that the lack of info wasn't very helpful!

I have to figure out what i will need to do to get them mounted and operating, but want to see them first so I can see what he's offering. The guy just sold his YJ he was going to swap these into for $1000! I bout fell over!

A YJ has a driver side front pumpkin and the Cj has a pass. side pumpkin. So you may want to take note what side it is on.

I paid $100 for my 44 out of a chief. It had 4:10 gears & an open carrier, and disc brakes.
A stock rear 60 should only be $300 or so.
Now if they have lockers or cromo axles, just been rebuilt, narrowed or things like that expect to pay more.
As Mtnwhir said check to be sure the pumpkin is on the right side for your set-up. also check if the are set up for SOA or SUA

I'd be asking what did they come from originally?

All depends as others have said "What's inside? Locker etc"

I got my front D 44 from a 1979 Cherokee. Disks and all. $AMC 150 at a recycler. Drums are going to be older??

Might as well put disks on the rear and ditch the drums. Not that tuff to do.

I'm suspecting some hardcore going on here. :D

Update:

They came out of an 86 Dodge. 8 lug
Disk front
Dont know what gears are in them however.
Pumpkin is on pass side.

Not sure if I want to go through the hassle at this point. Just had to take heads off and may have to rebuild bottom end as well.
