My new CJ is just shy of blowing out my ear drums. Can somebody recommend a good muffler for a 76 CJ with a chevy 350 engine?

First of all, what engine you have doesn't matter that much in muffler selection. Beyond that, the hard part is finding one that fits. There isn't much room under there. Stay away from Flowmaster and anything that says "turbo". I am partial to Magnaflows, but the small housing size needed for a CJ doesn't work as well as a bigger housing and will still be kinda loud. Beyond that it depends on your budget.

what is the problem with a "turbo" muffler?? I have been running a reverse flow turbo muffler for many years. It is very quiet, which may not be what is desired here but it suits me quite well.:D

When my CJ5 needed one I went over to autozone and got a universal turbo muffler and it bolted right in. You just need to know what size pipe you have and I also replaced the tail pipe. Worked great.

Where is the exhaust routed to? If its right outside the door before the rer wheel muffler selection isnt going to matter too much. Route it out the back.

I definitely like that idea. do they have kits to convert the exhaust to rear exit or is that a custom job

Can I see a pic of your exhaust the way its set up now? Do you have headers? Are they inside the frame rails or outside?

Thats how it came from the factory. Since you have a 350 are you running duel exhaust?

there should be a pic attached. it shows the headers coming off the block going over the frame under the body. it doesn't show the pipes coming out in front of the rear tires. and yes, it is a dual exhaust

Then it's going to need to be a custom exaust, Just running pipes out the back will make it so it's not as loud. I would take it to a exhaust shop.

Most "turbo" mufflers I have come across sound really bad. I mean really bad.

My exhaust comes out the sides and I'm running cherry bombs with turnouts. I'm kinda getting tired of how loud it is myself. I'm thinking of cutting off the turnouts and running pipe all the way out the back.

I have dual exhaust that used to exit under the tub before the rear axle. They were loud and the fumes were bad. I had a local muffler shop route it out behind the rear tires with magnaflow mufflers. The shop had to squeeze them in, but they fit. I am happy with the set up and the sound. In the picture you can see the tip of the right side it exits behind the tire and before the spring hanger. The left side is the same.

I don't know where the name came from, but it is a generic name for internally baffled mufflers. Most you run across are cheaply made and like i said, sound horrible. There are others, more expensive that can have a descent sound, made by prominent muffler manufactures.

Like others have said, run the exhaust to the rear and for even more sound abatement, have turndowns made to point at the ground.

What is a turnout? Is that basically a 90 degree tailpipe?

A turn out basically turns the pipe in a new direction. For fender well headers (like you, and I for that instance, have) need turnouts to the sides so fumes and heat exits in a different direction than straight back at the tire.

I have seen a few, but not many, exhaust jobs go from fender well headers to the rear of the jeep. In my year, the basic problem is the frame gets in the way of running the pipe back to inside the tire, and to the rear of the jeep. If you go under the frame, and are planning to go off road on intermediate or harder trails, you run the risk of crushing the pipe between a rock and the frame. A lot of people for this reason will run inside the frame headers or manifolds to route the tail pipe up high, and inside the frame the whole way to the back of the jeep. The draw back is muffler selection is Limited further for clearance issues... but it can be done, and can be done rather nicely too.

Your "easiest" option for lowering the noise level, would be to select a more muffled sounding muffler. I could not tell the muffler you currently have, but there is a real chance you could have a glass-pack style muffler which are designed to be loud. (us young punks like that! :D )

The flow masters are available in multiple sizes and "tones" to still give a nice rumble to the jeep, without being necessarily loud and obnoxious.

If you DO plan on going to a muffler shop, it will be more expensive, BUT you can tell them exactly what you want, and they can re-run the entire system for you if you like, and you'll have a lot less "guess" work to getting it right. I'm currently on my second set of mufflers and not completely satisfied with the result yet... but to be honest its been on the back burner for now

Show us a picture of the mufflers you have installed currently...

Great info! I'm almost certain that those are glass pack mufflers. My end game is to have a CJ for summer cruising, clearance is not a big concern. For that reason, I could potentially run under the frame.
