1981 cj7, 304 ,4 speed,twin sticked d300, amc20 with solid axles, Dana 30 , 33-12.5 tires, PsC BFH Front bumper with 8500lb Ramsey wench.
The radiator in my cj did not have a fan shroud on it when I bought it. The little bit that I got to drive it before I tore the steering down it didn't seem to get hot, was running around 200 degrees on the temp gauge but the weather was cool ( in the 40's). So I was messing around this morning and built this shroud out alluminum . What do you think, will it help in the cooling department?

If you want a factory plastic one I could sell you the one I pulled from my jeep its just taking up space.
 
Great fab work, looks good. Only suggestion would be to close up the bottom of the shroud to get most efficiency. Even so, as is it has to be better than no shroud at all.
 
Yes I thought about going all the way around, and I'm sure that would be better but the po put a 2" body lift on so the bottom couple inches of the fan are bellow the radiator. Plus this makes it easy off and on if need be. I slotted where the mounting bolts are so I just have to loosen the four bolts and slide it out.
It helps having a large commercial sheet metal shop at your disposal. :cool:

Yes it should help with the cooling. I had an over heating problem after i installed a 1" body lift. No shroud. I installed 1" motor mount lift and it helped. It got the fan centered in the radiator better. I still need a shroud tho. Maybe i'll copy yours.

You raised the motor?? I lowered the radiator so the hoses aligned. Electric fans are the way to go guys!:D
only runs when needed, warm engine faster and they don't take HP to run them. Did I mention quieter?
 
IOport 51... What do you suggest for a electric fan setup? I have not looked into them. How much $ are they ? I wouldn't be opposed I just don't know anything about them.
I'm not really sure I even have a heat problem, just seemed like a good idea to do something and I was bored so it was a nice little free project I could do.
 
If you want a shroud It should go all the way around. You wrote that you wanted to make it easy to remove and that you have a sheet metal shop at hand. I would complete the shroud by making a two piece arrangement where there is a bottom half and a top half. Box in the bottom so the fan has to draw air from the radiator not the open bottom with a radius the same as the top while keeping an eye on easy removal. Sure it would be a little more work, but you'd take really decent looking shroud project and make it great.
 
Hedge I could do that but I'm not sure if it would help. The po put a body lift on that makes the fan stick below the bottom of the radiator. Don't you think even with just the top done, with the whole radiator being shrouded that the fan will still suck most of its air through the radiator?
 
What your saying seems logical enough, but some folks have trouble keeping a AMC 304 cool. Pulling as much air as possible through the radiator rather than around it is always a good idea. Also, the shroud just might reduce the amount of air that flows through the radiator. Why? The volume of air flowing through a radiator when the jeep is traveling on the road is greater than what the fan can pull, the clutch allows the fan to free wheel so the extra air can move through. Without the shroud air is free to pass through the radiator anywhere, with the shroud the top is more or less blocked. If the bottom of the radiator is boxed in at the bottom, air has to move through ...... :) and that's my story and will stick to it, unless I'm wrong that is.
 
i would make it a bit longer, cover all the fan and protect your hands too.
