My CJ5 currently has no shroud. I hate the way it smears bugs all over from the fan. Is this a item I will use or just regret purchasing it?

A fan shroud, is an aid to engine cooling.

I realize it aids cooling is it important enough to spend the money on for the difference on cooling?

I guess living in Canada cooling hasn't been an issue.

If you encounter some sort of equatorial vortex (I just made that up....I think) or wheel your jeep hard enough it would benefit from a fan shroud.

LG's point was it aids in cooling. And a good point at that.

To answer your question is it worth it? I'm not really sure how your cooling fan is a bug juice issue. I lived and wheeled probably the buggiest place around (Florida) for years and never once thought, boy these bugs are somehow getting through my radiator (??????) and getting mauled by my fan and spread all over my engine!

Do you mean bug shield?...

So maybe a bit of clarification might help. Where are all of the bugs going?

He is right cooling is a important aspect. We get our hot stretches up here were cooling is a issue. My cj has only been on the road a few times and for what ever reason it seems to suck up lord knows what and spray it all over the engine compartment. Suppose Ill lay the cash out and get one. Cant make it any worse. For some reason I had it in my head people took them off for one reason or another to improve performance. Thanks for the input.

I like having them for nothing else than keeping you from sticking your hand in the fan while it is running.
They do aid in cooling but the CJ radiators are really overbuilt and cooling has never been an issue. We have the opposite problem in that in cold weather it takes forever to get heat.

Having tried with and without the shroud, I am going to leave mine on. JimsCJ5 really has a good point, it only takes once of touching a spinning fan. Even in a cold climate an engine can get worked pretty hard requiring help to cool it down.

Fingers needed for welding etc. In it goes. lumpy how do you find stock cooling in your neck of the woods. Do you run ice or any other additive in the coolant. The atv boys up here in the bush put some in the quads because there is no wind just stall hot air.

Come on guys can't you see the guy has a bug juice issue. For goodness sake who could stand having bug juice running freely under the hood of your favorite ride. I don't see how increasing the over all cooling, performance and longevity engineered into your engine by using the factory shroud could possibly be worth the additional stress of having bug guts under the hood. I'd run without it....... NOT!

I run a 3 row brass radiator with OEM shroud and a 195* t'stat.
I also have an ele. 'pusher' fan when needed.
Never any over heat, and I bought this Jeep new in 1985.
Mix your coolant only with distilled water-NEVER use 'tap' water.
I do a 'rod-out' on the radiator every 10 years or so.

lumpy not many people can say they redo their rad every ten years. For the last three decades. Pretty cool

Learn'd how to do my own radiator work cause I'm to cheap to pay someone else-:D
