First time Restoring....Please help

If pulling the engine it is easier to me to just pull everything, engine, Transmission , and Transfer Case . The setup is that you have the 2 motor mounts in the engine bay then on the bottom of the Transmission is another mount that is bolted to the skid plate. It is possible to pull everything (motor, Transmission , & x-case) together but you need a good lift with a load leveler and a pair or two of extra hands to help out.

To me the safest way to this job is to pull the Transfer Case /Transmission from underneath then the engine out the top. Start by placing a jack stand under the back of the engine or bell housing. I use a block of wood between the two as a cushion. In order to get the fit tight you might need to jack up the jeep at the skid plate just enough to slip the wood between the jack stand and the bell housing then lower the back of the motor onto the wood. Now you can drop the skid plate. Remember this is a good opportunity to lose some fingers or toes (or worse) so again safety is the key; don’t leave body parts under anything that could fall or drop on top of you. If you don’t have a good Transmission jack rent or buy one.

Put the pump jack tightly under the center of the skid plate but don’t lift the back of the motor off of the jack stand. Unbolt the Transmission mount from the skid plate then pull the skid plate to frame bolts and drop the skid plate as you lower the pump jack. Now use the Transmission jack to remove the boxes unbolting the Transmission from the bell housing. (Both boxes can be removed together if you have a good Transmission jack.) Remove the grill and pull the engine. Of course this doesn’t cover every step but it should get you there, just make sure everything else is disconnected such as wire connections, exhaust, and the like.

motor mounts
bell housing bolts
(support the trany with jack)
fuel line
disconnect and tie back the wiring
throttle cable
exhaust
(remove radiator so you don't damage it)
starter cable
