Hey guys, i'm looking at putting lockers in my 79 CJ7 . It has the AMC20 in the rear and Dana 30 in the front. I do not want to upgrade to 44 for the rear, yet. Does anybody make a locker for the AMC20 ? I would prefer an electric as i don't want to go through the hassles of mounting an air compressor. Any tips? :notworthy:

The only company's I know of that make electric lockers are Ox and Eaton but I don't think Eaton makes one for the 20.

No your right, Eaton doesn't. That's what I would have liked to have but they don't offer them for the 20. Your stuck with the more expensive route with either ARB or OxLocker for selectables.

Thanks guys, i did read the axles and lockers link already. I will be getting the one piece axles for a winter time project. In the event that i decide to do the whole axle, what vehicles came with the correct width Dana 44 to use as a donor.

I know I will be corrected on this but I think a 73 to 75 CJ will give you what you are looking for. after was an AMC20 and before was a off center 44 with two piece axles.:D

I just can,t pass up the opportunity to post the picture of "the mother of all axles".

I thought these were the mother of all axles:

Rod, that's the big daddy of all axles.:D

I agree. If it were the Mother of all axles she'd ( the mother ) be completely useless after giving birth.

72-75, before 70.5-71 were offset but had 1 piece shafts, well someone had to do it. :D

OK, so I missed it by a year.:D

Detroit. Selectables are fine, but a detroit is bullet proof. On road is fine, just takes a little getting use to.

I installed a LOKKA brand locker in my rear diff a couple of months ago. Its was $220 shipped. Works flawlessly. From what I understand, its the same as the Aussie, just renamed. Good luck with what u do.

you do it your self?

How long did it take?

Interested in this as well...considering doing some sort of LSD for my light wheeling but not wanting to spend a bunch of money on it. Lokka looks like an interesting AMC20 option.

I would also like to hear more about your experience with the LOKKA. Is it excessively loud as it disengages when cornering under normal driving conditions? Have you noticed any drawbacks?

I have a Spartan in the front and although it was not a very difficult job it was not as easy as they would have you believe. If you do not have a crazy low ratio you will need to pull the carrier and remove the ring gear. From what I have read the Spartan is the easiest to install. I won't remark on the price as I don't even remember what it cost but I am sure it was competitive.

I had no hesitation on putting one in the dana but the AMC20 is a bit different when it comes to carrier bearings and shims. The front is not used all the time but if the rear is not set up right it will be subject to high speed and constant use. In the 20 I would be inclined to use new bearings in the carrier and pinion and more than likely a new R&P. Differentials are very precise machines and if you want it to last any time it has to be pretty much dead on. IMHO:D
