I recently purchased a 1986 CJ7 . it has not been run in 5 years so I took the following steps.
-Oil change
-Fuel filter
- Fuel Pump
- Valve cover gasket
-Cap,rotor,plugs wires
- air filter
- fogger/carb cleaner/rust penetrator

Now for my problem. After doing all that I went to start it just cranked. Poured a little fuel in carb, started ran for 20 sec. (Did that a few times) Unplugged hose from fuel filter no fuel at all in there.

I read another artical to remove line on pump from the tank and blow air till u see fuel coming out. did that hooked up the line and BOOM started for like 3-5 min ran and idled. At the 4 min mark I went to the back of the Jeep and fuel is pouring all over the ground....

Thoughts?

That fuel leak might be coming from the fuel return line, if it still has one, going into the fuel sending unit at the top of the tank. It begins at the 1/4" hose out of the fuel filter, running along the left inside of the frame. It also could be coming from the main line out of the fuel sending unit which is the 5/16" hose into the hard line to the fuel pump..

x2 the return line probably rotted and cracked

setting for 5 years with ethanol in it? drop the tank clean it out and replace the tank filter.:D

If the jeep has had ethanol in it for that long ,plan on cleaning the carb before running it.

Along with everything already mentioned, pull your dipstick often and monitor whether or not your crankcase oil level starts rising. Five years is a long time for a mechanical fuel pump to sit. The inside diaphram can crack and start leaking gasoline in the crancase. Thins out your oil and can cause engine wear problems if you don't catch soon enough.

Did you hook the line back up properly? Did you crack an otherwise rotten fuel line. If so, easy fix. ...... Did it run before doing the preventive maintenance?
