hey guys this may be a simple one but the T400 in my CJ6 won't go into any gear. When the shifter is moved there is a grinding-type sound and gear doesn't engage. My mechanical knowledge is basic so i tightened what i could find externally. This happened while the vehicle was stationary in shed, i had driven it in there previous start.
I would really appreciate some help

Automatic transmissions *Usually* don't grind gears. If it's coming from the Transmission , it's probably not good...

If it's a Transfer Case that doesn't want to engage, that is different...

I would be ck'n oil levels;)

If you drove it in and tranny is still full. Chances are it just the Transfer Case is in between gears. Double check it.

Try rocking Jeep back and forth while trying to shift, either you are bound up or mechanical problem in auto. Remove linkage at T400 and try turning with wrench, if you can not turn you have automatic problem. May have to drop pan to find problem or unbind.
Hope this helps, keep us informed.

Where is the shift lever or cable for the Q-Trac?
Maybe it's in neutral?
Push or pull to try engage low range.

Once you have verified that it is not a Transfer Case issue, you may have to drop the pan on the tranny. I had a similar issue with a t350. There is a shifter detent linkage at the end of the rod that goes into Transmission case from external shift linkage. The nut that holds detent plate to end of shaft came loose and Transmission would not go into any gear. Pretty simple fix, but you have to drop the pan to get to it.

wicked! looks like my little girl has managed to push q-trac into neutral. Got my wheels turning again. Cheers.

Gota love the little one's wanting the jeep. In no time she'll be wanting to drive it.:)
