grinding noise? please help!

That is an AMC20 diff.

Now you have to pull both rear wheels, remove the center caps, mark the hubs and the axle together and the 'make the noise'. I'm betting the marks do not line up any more and the hub is slipping...

I am thinking about bringing it to a shop and have the work done but I have tools and a good know how of mechanics... should I attempt it?

and I also noticed it looks like fluid is leaking out of the seam where the differential connects to the axle? does it take new gasket or could I weld it?

and it seems like all signs point to new one piece hubs should I just go and buy the parts so when I take the wheels off to check the hub for slipping I can replace them right then?

If you have any mechanical ability I would do it my self.

It's very easy...

Pull the wheels, mark the axle and the hub. Put power down and see which one spun...

You can the replace the hub (and then most likely have the same problem later) or pop in some one piece axles (still easy to do) and be done with it...

It looks like someone already welded the tubes, seems odd they wouldn't have put 1 piece axles in already. We really need a pic of the wheel end of the axle.

Is the second pic where it's leaking fluid?

Looks like it is leaking on right side of diff where it meets the axle tube or is that the mark you made?.
which if it is may be low on diff fluid, and if you can we need pics of the axle end with wheel off showing lug nuts and spindle hub. And if it is 2 piece axle not too expensive or too hard to install a 1 piece set (if you can read and know how to hold a wrench your good to go). Pretty much agreeing with everybody else I guess.

Just for :dung:s and giggles I looked up a set of Superior 1 piece axles they were $290. from summit racing.
For the install a depth mike & surface grinder comes in handy to set the bearing preload.

Thanks to everyone that keeps checking back and helping me with this! very appriciated!!!
The red mark on the axle I put there with a marker thinking that was what you meant was spinning but I understood a few posts back. but the red mark is where I recently noticed leaking? how do you fix it... weld it? here is a better picture... and I will pull the wheel later this week and post more picture of that then.

Hmmm... First you need to clean it and find out if it seeping from the tube union or you have a crack.

IMHO it appears to be leaking at the tube union and if it has the 2 piece axles I believe it would be cheaper to find a replacement. I have seen them on some boards for less than $200.00 bucks with 1 piece axles already in them. But that's just my nickles worth of free advise .

In the first pic you put up you can see someone welded the tube thru the holes in the center section. the center sec. is cast steel and the tubes are mild steel, if the welding was done wrong it could have cracked the center section. And from the looks of the bubble gum weld I don't think they knew what they were doing.

Kicknjeep might have a good idea in looking for a used one.
