My T-4 is acting up a bit. In order to go into 1st, I find I have to double clutch a lot. Especially if I want to go into reverse. If I don't start off by going into 3rd (for example) my reverse gear doesn't stop spinning and will grind going in. Normal or in need of some fixing? 1982 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l T-4 .

Not normal you may want to check your clutch linkage for wear it's a common problem with it and if it looks ok check clutch adjustment you should have about 1" free play at the top.

What part of the linkage should I look for wear? My play is fine, I believe.

Where the parts fit togeather. I've had the rod wear to the point of almost breaking off I've had the hole it fits into get very oblong and the plastic piece that snaps on the ball that fits into the z-bar wear out. If you look at it real close you will be able to tell if any of it is worn.

Thanks, I'll climb under there next weekend and check it out!

When you say "z-bar", do you mean the throwout bearing lever? Or are you talking about the rod that goes through the firewall? Sorry, I'm a noob. I replaced the short rod that fits into the throw out bearing lever, the long rod that connects to the pedal lever is next.

Okay, I think you mean the bell crank! Did you replace the z-bar/bell crank?

The Z-bar bolts to the body on one side and to the motor on the other. The body side has the rod comming from the pedal and the motor side has the rod with the adjuster. The holes that the rods fit into can wear and there is a nylon bushing on both ends of it where the mounts fit into it. Hope this helps. If not I will see if I can find a pic of it.

I have replaced the adjuster rod and the nylon bushings.

I just ordered a new z-bar/bell crank. $22 shipped, I'll just swap it out. I hope this will fix it!
