HEI Education needed please

I am going back together at long last. Just ordered up some stuff to get it finished up...almost.

I have been reading and reading about the HEI deal/upgrade and am more confused now than I was a few days ago! IF I get an HEI distributor, what all else can I NOT worry about replacing. (What I had was functional; I drove it into the garage to take the battery off in November.) As far as I can tell, to go back with stock, I need to procure a new distributor complete with rotor and cap, the coil thing bolted to the side of the engine, and ignition module that is bolted to the driver fender in addition new plugs and wires of course.

Again, IF I get an HEI distributor, what else needs to be replaced in the aforementioned list? As always, any and all help is appreciated.

If you swap to a HEI most places will sell a complete set up. They come with new distributor, rotor, cap, coil and 8mm wires. All you would need to get is a set of plugs. Since its a one wire hook up you just need to find the 12 volt power from your old ignition system to run a wire to the batt side of the HEI.

Nothing more to HEI than dropping it in, hooking up a couple wires, and going on about your business.

Also, forgot to mention -- make sure that 12 volt power source for the HEI is 12 volt switched -- otherwise, it will stay running when you turn the key off. I'm sure you knew that, just wanted to make sure I said it.

I have an HEI setup. I think it is a davis unified ignition but it does not say anywhere on it. My question is about the yellow wire. I am rewiring the jeep and i know the black wire is ground, the 2 red wires are for the primary and secondary coils and need switched 12 volts, what do i do with the last yellow wire?

It will be the best upgrade you will ever do to your jeep. Look up DUI distributors and read up on them
