help ID lockers?

can anyone help me ID these lockers? Was doing services and my rear makes this god awful snapping noise at times and feels like it sends the *** end to the side a bit...Are lockers rebuildable/Do they offer service parts? require any special fluid/additive?

I believe you are supposed to run a higher weight gear oil with lockers. I'm running 85w140 I believe, with a detroit in the rear and lock-right up front. Can't really help with the exact ID though.

thanks, got plenty of 75W140 syn. hanging around the shop so maybe ill just use that.

Last two pictures Look like a Positraction housing............has disc's inside , they do require a special additive to the oil..............Not sure what the first two pictures are.

i dont see discs? just a butt load of spider gears? will any Limited slip additive work? have the mopar stuff..

Someone else here will chime in hopefully. If it is a full case automatic locker like a Detroit, I believe you just run heavier oil. If it is a "Positrac" unit then I believe there is a special oil like Tarry pointed out that you have to add into the fluid. Someone who knows these things better should be able to identify and steer you correctly, as I am not even truly sure what all the difference in an automatic locker and a "positrac" unit are..

Sounds normal for a locker. The Detroit Locker is noisy as it locks and unlocks making some people think there is something wrong.

What you are describing sounds normal. No need to rebuild anything.
The PO set your jeep up for aggressive traction. But aggressive traction comes at the cost of directional stability. As you found out a little too much gas on a turn when you have a locker in the rear can cause the rear to slide out and fishtail.
I often say a locker can always keep you moving but not always in the direction you want to go.

EDIT: They have come out with a newer version of the Detroit Locker that is quieter. They call it the SofLocker.
Also, the Limited slip you have in front needs an additive like this:
The locker in the rear doesn't need any additive.

Yes, I assume you are talking about this Limited slip additive:

The synthetic oil will work great although in all honesty I never use synthetic in my axles or gearboxes. It's my opinion that traditional oils are fine for gears. Just my opinion. If you already bought the oil don't bother returning it.

yes thats the stuff...work at a jeep dealer so i have it available. And in most cases...its free.
