Just bought an old CJ5 . Seller told me it was a 1973. VIN says otherwise. It has the 225 motor and the wipers are on the bottom. Gas filler is right behind the driver's door. VIN is 8305C17358067
I think it is a 68-70. Anybody know how to ID the year???
My '71 CJ5 , with a DOM of Dec '70 has a S/N of 370239... If it's got a wheelbase of 81 inches, it's not a '73. The '72 and up had longer noses to accomodate the AMC inline 6. I believe the later CJ's had an 84 inch wheel base due to these changes...
67 cj5,225 Dauntless, D30,chrome molies, detroit, D44, full floating detroit, custom steering, disc all the way around,2 inch lift on 31s, armored up
70 cj6 4 inch lift
Barry, let me ask a few questions
the rear axle, is it offset to the passenger side?
does it have dust caps, does it have e brakes on the axle or the t case?

OK, I am about to get remote for a few days so I will explain
dust caps 69 or earlier, they started putting flanged axles in during late 69, real rare in 69s all 70s and 71s are flanged and passenger offset.
in 72 went to the Dana 20 with center pumpkin. ebrake was always on the t case till 71 where it went on the rear axle. 71 could be either
that can identify your last 3 years, with that number though I would say it is a 70 or 71, if either it is a nice machine and we can put a few mods into it and have a killer CJ5
Welcome to the site Barry. Huntsville is my old home town; I can see where there would be some pretty good wheeling in the mountains around there and lots of limestone to climb over.
Do you think you could help me decode mine I found a tag on the drivers side on the Fire wall under the hood. I have no title to help me either and would like to get one.It has the following on it
Can anyone help?
