HELP with ID of this!!!

1985 jeep CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l head motor was making a clicking noise so I shut it off pulled the #6 plug and it was bent up so I stuck a magnet into the cylinder and this is what I pulled out. What is it? looks like it use to be hollow kinda like a bearing cage. Anybody have an idea or know what it is?

looks like something that probably got dropped into the carb/intake and finally worked it's way down to the cylinder...that's just my guess

So, the head should come off to check for further damage? It might have come from the carb. But then it is a Jeep, so if it runs good afterwards let it go.

if it ran good,I would run it

I'd pull the head and check for scarring in the cylinder and use that as an excuse get the funds released for a 4.0 swap from the lady boss.

Ok pulled the mysterious piece of metal out did a compression check, all 6 cylinders 110. I left the compression gauge on the cylinder with the metal in it and no leak down after 5 minutes of sitting. Put in a new spark plug it fired right up idled good no sounds noise or leaks. good oil pressure 50-60 idling. Took it for a spin around the block and ran great.

Looks like that washer somebody accidently dropped in the intake manifold while installing a rebuilt carb to me. You might be lucky. The washer was softer than the metal parts beating it up. I once forgot to tighten a bolt on the carb. throat of my Shovelhead. The bolt was sucked into one cylinder and the washer in the other, almost instant and expensive motor death.

What is your compression supposed to be? 110 seems a little low to me. My AMC 304 V8 called for 120-AMC 150 and ran at ~135, my 360 runs at ~145, a friends Dauntless Buick 225 V6 V6 runs at ~160. What do the other cylinders have for compression?

Yes I also think it is a washer. 110 on all 6 cylinders is my compression

They say as long as all your compression readings are within a certain % your are good to go. You just might have gotten away with it this time. Just imagine how many times that piece was pummeled by your piston. 2,000 RPM's or so multiplied by the time it took you to notice. Thats a lot of banging around.

Sounds like it's ok I wouldn't worry about it.
