I picked up a 1980 CJ5 , in pieces literally and without a Transfer Case . The good news is that it has a new GM v6 with a T-5 Transmission . I think (but not positive) that I've determined that a Dana 300 Transfer Case would work but I'd like to know if any other TC's would work as well, along with pros and cons.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The T-5 (along with it's brother the T-4 ) were the worst transmissions to go into a CJ. They make adapters to mate other trannys to jeep TCases but since you don't even have a TCase I say get a GM tranny and TCase that bolt up to your V6. You should be able to fine a pair that came out of a GM 4x4 that will bolt in without any adapters.

that is great advice, why adapt when you can just fit and save money.
plus, that really is not a tranny that will last once the push comes to shove

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, thanks.

Any suggestions as to years/models of GM 4x4's I need to be looking for?

Do you know what your V6 came out of? What V6 and year is it?

Yes, the casting numbers indicate an '85 date. It is either rebuilt or new, but I'm the second owner since the guy that bought the engine and I haven't been able to make contact with him yet, so I don't know for sure.

It is a GM 4.3 v6. If you have a link or anything that would help me do the research, that would be great. Thanks

I am no GM expert but I found out the 4.3 liter engine was in the S10 Pickup and Blazer from 1988 to 2000. I would think you could get a tranny and TCase from one of those. They are newer than your engine and I don't know if that would be a problem.

You will also need to fabricate a Transmission mount. Maybe something like mine:

There should be other options but as I said, I don't know GM.

Wait a minute. The TCase in the S10 has the front output on the drivers side. You have your pumpkin on the passenger side.

Thanks for the help and pics Dave. I was given a guys name yesterday that supposedly is a wizard on what I need to do, but I haven't been able to reach him yet. When I hear what he has to say, I'll post it here. Another friend said the same thing as you did about the s10 and Blazers, but also pointed out the passenger/driver side issue. Guess I could do a front diff. swap maybe too? Don't know how that would match up dimension wise. Or maybe something from a newer model jeep? I'm learning all of this from scratch, so it's going to be an adventure but at least the frame will is all out in the open so now will be the time to do it.

Yes you could swap out the front axle to make it work but we are talking about a very common engine. I would think there should be an easy swap with a passenger side drive shaft.

i'm interested as well with this swap for my 82 CJ5 .....hope someone can help!
The same swap? ? ?
Do you have a GM V6 with a T-5 tranny and no Transfer Case ?
If so I would give the same advice: get a GM drive-train.
If not you might want to start your own thread. Getting different swaps with different variables in the same thread will be too confusing for anyone to follow.
