Anyone make/seen a homemade hardtop? Thinking of making one for my CJ5 . Square tubing and light sheet metal. Removable side and rear windows would be great.

As hard as it is to find a hardtop for a CJ5 if you make one people would like it could make you rich.

I understand the center of gravity thing, thanks for pointing that out. I really want a safari (as in African safari) look. Maybe sheet metal for the roof with roll up canvas sides and back.

Sounds interesting. I don't know if I have any advice for you but I'd love to see it done. You'll have to post it.

Wow, a metal roof and canvas sides would be very cool idea. I personally like having a bikini top or just my windows from my supertop removed so that idea intrigues me. I may start brainstorming and try to help you bring up some more ideas for fabbing this up.

I think this is one of those rally tops. I followed this build on JeepForum and it is one of my favorite CJ5 's out there.

I had not seen that site when I had A 5 I could not find a hardtop that is one of the reasons why I now own A 7. winters can be really cold here and the factory soft tops just plain sucked. All the rust holes didn't help either:laugh:

Never saw a homemade hardtop that didn't look like a piece of :dung:.

Used hardtops are out there -craigslist or wanted to buy. Good luck.

I never thought the hard top was warmer than the soft top just more secure. the soft top was actually quieter.:D

I don't know how you can say that I have had both and the soft top is a lot louder and the hardtop is a lot warmer. :censored:

Did you have a hard top on a CJ5 ?? :wtf:

Ok, design (and maybe some fabrication) for the top starts this weekend. Also going to convert the points ignition to electronic. Anyone use Mallory conversion units before? Also, should I worry about rebuilding the old carb or replace it? What would be a good (but reasonably unexpensive) upgrade?

ps thanks for all the input

You should make new threads for these mods instead of blending it in with a thread on the hardtop.
But as long as you brought it up. I would keep the OEM carb unless it give you trouble.
Ignition: I would do the Team Rush upgrade. http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f2/teamrush-ignition-upgrade-11416/
