Hood Louvers?

Hood Louvers?
Kind of a Tuxedo Park version, very adult. ...... oh man I think I've lost my edge.

Now THAT was impressive. I ordered the louvers Friday night and they were delivered today (Monday). I am stunned, they were scheduled to be here on the 25th, 10 from now. I've already primed them and will paint black. Placement has been difficult for me. Out where I want them the hood curves quite a bit. Where BusaDave has them it's a little forward of where I want them to be. The location that screams "Here ... Here .... Here" is between the hood bumpers, toward the backup on the hump, but then they are less over the headers and toward the filter cover. I'm taking pictures and will write up the install.

The main reason I put my vent, where it is......
I have rid'n Jeeps with the vents on the side of the hood.
With the top off-The engine heat comes around the 'door' and into the cab.
I always run a long bikini top. So the engine heat that comes out of mine, just goes over the top.

I've placed mine, don't really kow if I like them there or not. they are further woward the edge, but still on the top and as far back as the reinforcing edge of rhe hood will allow. I made them perpendicular to the back edge of the hood. Unfortunately they have a crooked look to them even though they aren't. If nothing else they will blow hot air on the windshield. Good, bad, I don't know. The build thread would be up and running except I'm having trouble with the paint. Yes, paint. My powder coater is closed. The etching primer went on well enough, but I grabbed the wrong paint can and the paint and primer didn't work well together. Now the part is being stripped, ran out of stripper before the job was done. It will be painted tonight or tomorrow. There were some valuable things learned during the install, most will be good to know so you don't end upmaking the same mistakes I did.

Come on H'hog. You know the drill-PICTURES :poke::laugh:

Don't worry, as I said this will be written up. I need to wait until the paint dries and attached for final pictures.

What vents did you end up get'n?

:) ........ Wait for it ....... wait for it ....... :)

Them theres' fightin' words. :( But I understand what you mean.

Painting can be either fun and successful or goes horribly wrong. Almost from the beginning the first attempt at painting went horribly wrong, the paint was sticky for far to long and when I cut the hood some cutting dust settled on the paint making it unacceptably rough. The paint had to come off. This time the paint stuck well and feels exactly right to the touch. Painted the top last night and the bottom this morning.

Now I'm looking at the hood. My jeep is a 15-20 foot model, meaning that it looks pretty good at that distance. Closer, not so much, not so much at all. Now I'm becoming serious about painting the hood center hump semi-gloss black. The old jeepers trick to make it easier to see in the bright sun. At least that is the excuse. In reality I want to get rid of the jeep crease, c/o the PO. To do it correctly the hood will require MORE filler. At least I know how to do it right.....

Don't use 'bondo' on the hood.
Use lead--What I did.

There is already a ton of bondo on the hood, I didn't know it until cutting the hood for the louvers. I'll knock most of the dent out and only use body filler as it was meant to be used. I've never used lead, but I guarantee you if the hood were heated enough to take lead the thing would explode in a bondo fueled inferno.

I was being careful with the paint this time, making sure the coating wasn't too thick. Last night I noticed the paint was a little thin. So it was sprayed another light coat. At about 11:00pm they were dry enough to install. I was going to bolt them on, but ended up doing as several others have done and riveted them in place. ....Naturally the rivet gun scratched some of the new paint, the paint should have cured a little longer. Tonight I'll smooth the scratches down, mask and paint both the scratches AND the raw rivet heads. Dude, I'm doing the best I can .... yeah I know it's like waiting for paint to dry. :lpopcorn:

:notworthy:

Sounds like my projects----:D

It does seem like this is a subject that draws interest almost every time the subject comes up.
