I've had a few Jeeps T-18 with reverse over and down that weren't 79, all were swapped in from a truck, ford or from a 79. They changed the top cover in 79 that resulted in reverse being over and down. If you don't mind post a pic of your vin tag.My '78 CJ7 has a factory T-18a, and it has the "over & down" reverse.
I was of the impression that the over and up would be the t-18s that used an extra arm mounted to the drivers side of the case to shift reverse. this has been described as an "early version" in the only manual I have found so far.
So far I am amazed at the lack on information on this very popular Transmission .![]()
Well I went back to the first yard and with their permission tried to remove the top cover and inspect the gears. I could only get the left side up about an inch and a half but for what seemed a few chips on the reverse gear from what I could see the rest were okay (novice that I am). Asking price was $AMC 150 clams last thursday but after I took the guy to the Transmission . and discussed it with him we agreed at $20 over core for a total of $70. I hope I didn't get burned. Indeed what I thought was a crack turned out to be nothing. Found the date code tag while I was at it;

Now I just got to decipher it.
I think I've had this once or twice.One of your balls is stuck
