Hi IO, hope you've been keeping well. The shifter is stuck but the in/output shafts spin okay. By the wrecking yard wreckord this came out of an '80 Ford F truck. Going to be checking another boneyard toworrow and see if there one less crusty and without a crack in the top.

Thanks so much Hack for those pics. Well went out to the other yard and they had one that was mis shelved. Turned out we looked in the region it was while we were waiting for help, but I didn't recognise it being hooked up to a Ford Transfer Case . Having arrived just when they took a lunch delivery of pizza my buddie and I scrounged through the yard and found a candidate (2wd) still in the truck. Of course it didn't dawn on me that I could've ran the shifter through its positions (and using Hack's photos) to detirmine what it was. :p

The only year reverse was over and down in a CJ T-18 was 1979.
If the ford T-18 you have is an 80 it will have reverse over and down as well.

Since I'm looking at the Ford T-18 conversion it could be either depending on what side of the breakpoint was. If I could change the title of this thread I would. At first I was hoping just to slide in the Jeep T18a, but with all the variations going Ford simplifies the search for these archaic transmissions. Sorry if'n I sound smug, I just came to this realization last week about going the Ford route.

My '78 CJ7 has a factory T-18a, and it has the "over & down" reverse.
I've had a few Jeeps T-18 with reverse over and down that weren't 79, all were swapped in from a truck, ford or from a 79. They changed the top cover in 79 that resulted in reverse being over and down. If you don't mind post a pic of your vin tag.

I was of the impression that the over and up would be the t-18s that used an extra arm mounted to the drivers side of the case to shift reverse. this has been described as an "early version" in the only manual I have found so far.

So far I am amazed at the lack on information on this very popular Transmission .

Well I went back to the first yard and with their permission tried to remove the top cover and inspect the gears. I could only get the left side up about an inch and a half but for what seemed a few chips on the reverse gear from what I could see the rest were okay (novice that I am). Asking price was $AMC 150 clams last thursday but after I took the guy to the Transmission . and discussed it with him we agreed at $20 over core for a total of $70. I hope I didn't get burned. Indeed what I thought was a crack turned out to be nothing. Found the date code tag while I was at it;

Now I just got to decipher it.

Yes, the early CJ T-18 's had a bulge or boss on the driver side rear with reverse over and up. In 79, the reverse shifter fork was moved from the side of the case into the top cover. Therefore the boss was removed in the 79 case.

Can anyone help on a date code?

Now I just got to decipher it.

The E at the beginning should be for 1980 and the number after it the exact year

It will also help to put it in neutral then remove the top cover ;)

I own a Jeep T-18 /Dana 20 close ratio that I removed from a 75 that is over and down and has a smooth side. It also does not have a tag on the top. There is no reason why it is not a mix and match in the 75 as it may be in my 77.The manule I own for the ford T-18 lists 5 variations. one of which has the reverse arm on the inside of the case and four more that seem to differ primarily with input and output shafts.

I have been studying on replacing the close ration with wide ratio gear set. I have not yet determined if it is possible and /or if the extra low gears are all that desirable in my Jeep.

I am thinking it may be possible to swap the output shaft from the jeep intop the ford and have it mate with the Dana 20 .

The gearshift is frozen in place. I'll probably have to remove it before removal of the cover. Since the T-18 was a factory option back in '78 I'm thinking it's just an enhancement of 'BB's value. I'm in no hurry on this project as the T-150 is still working fine.

One of your balls is stuck/rusted.:D

My case number is 12 64 065 906 and the shift is 13 01 097 905 there is another number on the shifter J 11 78.

I am not trying to hijack your thread but if I am in your way don't hesitate to say something.

Late............should be over and down. All the Ford cases had the wide spread bolt pattern with the two bosses in the middle un-drilled.........Pull the cover , the only real way to check gear ratio...........the later versions also will have 3 aluminum shifting forks inside...........the older version only two forks with the external lever for Reverse. All Ford T-18 's had Pass side PTO......Jeep versions were on the drivers side. T-19's had access on both sides.

:D:D:D:D

Rusty Balls  say it ain't so.
I've been able to detirmine that this Transmission is a 1980. The case no. (not that this has anything to do with the ratios) is 13-01-065-907.
I'm picking it up this morning and as it seems to be stuck in gear I'm going to have to figure out how to remove the top cover. I'm only guessing that I'll have to remove the shifter first.
