Howell TBI Dies in 4th Gear

Hey Guys,

So I've had this issue since i bought my CJ5 . I can accelerate 1st through 3rd gears fine, but when i get to 4th gear, if i push the pedal too far the engine starts to die on me.

These are the following things i've done to try to fix the problem:

1: Replaced all the sensors (O2/MAP/TPS)
2: NEW PCV/Idle Air control valve
3: Bought a rebuilt TBI unit
4: Bought a NOS ECM (switched out the CJ chip)
5: Ran a new return line (5/16th hose) directly to the return port on the tank.
6: Replaced Fuel Pump and Filter multiple times.
7: Checked all the vacuum lines

I'm at my wits end here. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean you swapped the old chip into the NOS ECM, or switched out the CJ chip for a new one?

Did you have a PSI issue or just thought it would help? What was your return PSI, before then after install of the new return line?

Before I bought any parts I would have taken a log of the block learn numbers without the log your working blind when it comes to FI. I'm not saying its fuel related, but I would start there after a full tuneup.

A $50 ALDL cable (or you can make your own for $5), old laptop, and free online program.
