Good Morning,

I'm finally getting some money to get back to working on my jeep again. I'd pulled the motor about 6 weeks ago, and I found that the Transmission bell housing had cracked, causing the problem I was having with the starter barely contacting the ring gear. I also found that the input shaft has a lot of slop too, probably wasn't too good on it with the engine & Transmission getting misaligned when that crack happened. I'm going to get the Transmission rebuilt, and just wondering what I can expect. I'd deliver it to the shop, no need for them to pull it. It's the 4-speed (T-4 ?) Transmission . I'm also wondering if it's possible for it to be rebuilt as a 5-speed? I've just started my research, but sounds like the case is the same for the T-4 and T-5 . It'd be nice to have an Overdrive for the highway driving.

Have you checked locally (CL) for a used one? I sold mine quickly for $375. I know some places that build/sell transmissions and parts kits (Novak for one) that wont touch a T-4 /5. Depending on what hard parts yours need's replaced, I would think you'd be looking at least $1500 for a shop to do it

The T-4 /T-5 cases are darned near the same, but different. There is an extra hump along the side of the T-5 Transmission .

I hope you have a T-4 , I think it's out of the SR4 date range. None of them are more than adequate. If it's an SR4 it's not worth rebuilding. I had mine rebuilt 3 times in less than a month. The Transmission shop finally refused to fix it and gave me my money back. Unfortunately it was worse after the "repair" than it was before. Therefore I will NEVER have anything good to say about an SR4 ..... and it was taken care of, no it wasn't abused.
