1979 Jeep CJ7 TH400 Automatic 258 I6 Quadratrac Amc 20 rear & Dana 30 front, 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires. Currently a Complete Custom Rebuild in progress.

Also I own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, White, all stock with 4.0L. automatic, and police package. Best part of that is it came with leather seats! This package also has the NP242 Transfer Case, 8.25 rear end, and trailer towing package.
Upon inspecting my front axle after a complete tear down, I noticed a lot of crud (mainly dirt & oil mixture) on the inside of the passenger differential tube.

The QT catalog shows "#18 Inner Axle Seal J8121781 $2.99."

Is that the part next to the Differential Bearing? (Silver disc in picture?)

If so, I guess I need to remove the differential to get to it? Then what is the flange on the inside of the axle for? Just a dust shield?

Thanks for any help. It would beat just ordering parts and figuring out where they go. Rod

Yes the seal is by the diff. bearing, and you have to remove the diff to get to it.
Your right the outside is just for the dust shield.
 
Replace them BOTH.
Don't do the cheap here either.

LG, by both you mean both seals - both sides? Bearings all look good. Even in the hub. If I had to guess, I would say they had been replaced before. Locking nuts had gouges in them from a screwdriver or chisel. Guess $10 for a socket was a little much. Rod

PS. LG or OldDog, any special tools needed to remove the differential bearings to get to the seals?

By the book you need a case spreader #15 Orange and a gauge set #14 Blue to spread, if not just pry the diff out after removing caps. Pound out inner seals with long bar/screwdriver/pipe/axle & hammer, and install inner seals with #D-112 Red, if no D-112 installer find a socket that fits seal exactly and with a long extension carefully hammer in.
Before assembly check axle seal surface, for wear and fix or repair if any.
All new seals are 1 piece.

Since the shims are held in place by the bearings and I don't have a spreader, I just use a pry bar. Be careful though it's heavy and you do not want it to hit the floor.
I use a long 1/2" extension and a socket that fits to drive them out and back in. Also be sure to clean the seal surface good and use a little silicone to seal them.
I'd also check the spindle bearings and seals while it's apart.

Mark and remove the bearing caps.
Lay some thick padding under the diff.
Put a rope around the carrier(after you pull the axles out)and just jerk the rope a couple of times. The carrier will come out.
May need a rubber mallet to re-seat the carrier when done.
YES- the seal on both sides should be replaced.
Sockets with extensions, is all you need to R&R those seals. Buy a spare seal or 2, in-case you "F" one up on install.
