I know it was rare but does anyone know what years the iron duke should have been available with the 176? I'm picking up a parts jeep and the guy swears it's all original and he's the original owner. It's an 81 iron duke/T-176 with 4.10 narrow Tracs. Body, frame, and engine are beyond salvage. I plan on using the axles, hard top, roll bar, random parts, and the title to build a pretty much new daily driver CJ7 when my scrambler is done. But having the iron duke in my CJ8 I may throw the T-176 in that. As long as it was a possibility that year anyways.

Never heard of the T-176 behind the 4 cyl but the T-176 was available starting in 1980.

:agree: Nor have I.
Post up pictures to confirm it is in fact a T-176 .

Unless someone special ordered it that way. More than likely the SR4 was scrapped and replaced with the 176.

I agree with the others.
Factory never offered a 176 behind a 4cyl
The 4cyl and SR4 were a package deal in 80-81
It wouldn't make sense for the factory to put the shorter (by 3") 176 in the longer CJ7 as well.
In 1980-81 most wouldn't have known the 176 was a better Transmission then the SR4 , we only know that because we have history on our side.
It's possible it was a dealer add-on, personal add-on for any number of reasons.
If in fact it is a 176.

I've seen other cases of them with the 4 cylinder. With the 14 spline inputs as well. The 6/8 applications had 10.spline shafts.

So you have seen others that replaced the SR4 with a 176.
If I owned a 4banger I would as well.

That's fine. Like I said the first year would've been 1980. If you do buy this please post pics. I want to see how they dealt with moving the Transmission back to get the proper spacing. Extended bell housing? Spacer? Curiosity has me now.

Bellhousing looked normal didn't see any spacer. What caught my eye was the straight shifter with about a 15° bend in it. Shift pattern is with the reverse down to the right. I looked underneath and it was definitely a t17x. What the difference with the 176 and 177? I feel like Transmission location would be about the same as with a v8/176 combo. There shouldn't be too much length difference as they're both 4 cylinders lengthwise. I'm probably going to go pay tonight and hopefully pickup this weekend. Weather permitting. I was already going to get it before I noticed the Transmission . $200 for a parts CJ7 with a title and 4.10s couldn't be passed by.

T-177 has very slightly lower 1st and 2nd gears.

Wow nice find. Good point on the 8 cyl. Motor mounts could help with the positioning as well. Still would love to see pics.

No need for spacers or different length bell housing on a later 80's. The frame is set up with 2 sets of skid mounting holes and the skid is set up for several transmissions. Drive shaft length is different. There are several different tunnel covers for the different transmissions. The T17x also has 2 sets of mounting holes.

I went from an AMC 150 with a T-4 , to a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and T177. Turned out that the AMC 150 - T-4 combo used the same length drive shafts as the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l - T177. Had I done a Transmission swap only the shafts would not fit. And spline counts on input shafts were different on the 4 cyl version T-4 , and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l T-4 .

The end of the engines are pretty much in the same position, the size differences are are behind the bell and are adjusted for by location of skid and drive shaft lengths. Don't see why earlier models wouldn't be the same.

All of the T-176 's I have come across turn out to be T177's when I looked at the tag.

Transmission 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Rev
T-176 3.52 2.27 1.46 1.00 3.52
T-177 3.82 2.29 1.46 1.00 3.82
T-178 3.00 2.08 1.47 1.00 3.01

I got to crawl under it and it is in fact at 176. I was hoping to get it pulled out of the shed it's in but there's just too much damn snow. I had to crawl in a window and crawl underneath the jeep. It's been parked for several years and has tons of debris under it including some assorted skeletons. The guy who owns it is in his early 80s and bought it brand new. He said the only major thing he ever had repaired was the axle shaft that spun the splines. He parked it in the mid 90s because the frame was rotten. Tub also looks shot. I didn't look for stickers but I think it wasnt a base package v8 can see the seats were nice at one point. It has a dealer installed chrome grille, chrome wheels, and looks like the fancy steering wheel and grab bar. Frame and tub are absolutely shot though. They parked it in a shed so narrow you can't open the doors his son drove it in and crawled out the rear hatch. They're supposed to get 12-16".today so it will probably have to sit there until spring. I did get to find the axle code. It's m. Gotta look that up in a little bit.
I'm assuming it's 4.10. My CJ8 has 3.73s which is gg.

Well I may be interested in the wheels ,grab bar and steering wheel along with your 3.73 axles when the time comes. Don't forget about me.

My 3.73 are going to stay in my scrambler. I'm actually buying this for parts and a title for a future daily driver build. Going to buy an all new body, a rebuilt motor, an ax15 and efi. Oh a new tdk galvanized frame too.it having a 176 and the iron duke is a plus. If my scrambler SR4 goes I'll put this in it. But it's possible I could put the 176 with a built efi amc 2.5 in my daily driver CJ7 when I get around to that. Oh found out m axle is Trac lock 4.10.
