When I turn the engine off I'm getting sputters after the fact, and have some pretty serious loss of power (can't top 40MPH). Is this a symptom of my timing being off? I know the duke has meshed gears that could potentially need replacing, but if timing is an issue can I check it and adjust accordingly? Or would i have to replace the gears (which looks like a pain)?

Chilton's doesn't do a great job explaining how to check/adjust timing, other than it being 5BTDC. Thanks, sorry about the novice-ness.

Correction, looks like 10BTDC.

Also, if anyone could let me know if it's possible to adjust the timing on the duke by turning the distributor please let me know. Mine looks like the bolts are hooked in a static location and wouldn't allow any turning but I haven't poked around much.
