at first glance i thought it was brake fluid. now im not so sure and i wanted some input before blindly taking things apart. can the brakes leak from inside the drum? or is it maybe an internal axle seal?

mine looks like your top picture and I am taking mine to the shop to get the axle seal replaced. Yours looks much worse than mine

I realize that this is from another forum, however it does apply here as well.

i would put money on it being your axle seal. not a hard job if mechanically inclined. i would recommend maybe checking and repacking your bearing while your in there.

What's the fluid? Gear lube vs brake fluid is quite different.

Take a closer look.

In my experience, gear oil has a distinctive FUNK  to it that you'll know when you smell it. If it is brake fluid you'll noticed a drop in the fluid level in your master cylinder.
Best of luck
