My first consideration would be low gear oil in the axle.

If you didn't have the hubs locked it would have nothing to do with it being towed.

You might check that your vent is working and not pluged.

If it's leaking then you still have oil in it. I would say that it's just some bad luck. Check the bearing to make sure that isn't what made the seal go. Try to move the pinion up and down and if it does move you need to replace the bearing along with the seal.

Is there ANY side to side or front to back play in the pinion yoke.

Are you sure it came from the rear diff and not the t'case?

Make dang sure the vent for the axle is good.

You should see a hose coming off the top of the axle that goes up above the frame with a one way valve in the end of it.
