Down to the small, but nagging problems. When I installed my Dana 20 Transfer Case the seals were meticulously changed. With the advice of Rob at Willys Works the plate was lightly leveled on a bench belt grinder to make sure the area around the bolt holes were level. To prevent warping the plate the bolts were torqued properly.

So, a couple years later I've got a pretty decent leak around the plate. No question about it the plate needs to come off and a new gasket either needs to be made or bought. With the horrible quality of available gaskets this time I think I'll be making my own. Is there a reliable way to stop this sort of leak or is it going to be another ever few year maintenance job?

If the gasket isn't working for you toss it, and use black RTV or Right Stuff

:agree: I use RTV on most gaskets, especially the junk from China that we just don't seem to be able to get away from. Just a little insurance to be sure they don't leak. As Posi says, you don't even need a gasket in many cases, just the RTV.

I would suggest the Black RTV also, wherever it comes from. When I apply it both surfaces get smeared, stick 'em together then let it sit for awhile, before putting the oil in.

I did the RTV gasket stuff and the paper gasket. The black stuff. Will have to look for "The Right Stuff", never used it before. Years ago my HD shovel head had the same problem, come to think of it the grey stuff they suggested was the only thing that worked and it worked very well indeed.

This is the best way to go. :chug:
Have you ck'd the cover plate bolts to be sure they are tight?

I have used "the Right Stuff" on a couple of things as well and it has worked very good for me. The only caveat to this, is that when you stick something together with the Right Stuff, you better dang well have it like you want it, because after it sets, it is a major pain in the you-know-what to remove whatever you used it on. It remains soft, but seems to have extremely high adhesion, almost like a glue. Then again, maybe I just cleaned my surfaces too well. :dunno:

Heat 'gun' is handy for separating parts with that type of sealer used.;)

Where can you buy "The Right Stuff" other than Amazon? Does it require this caulk gun the reviews talk about?

Found mine at Walmart.
You can also use Aviation Form a Gasket(non hardening)
LG

You can get it at most auto stores. It comes as a chalk tube or a bottle (under pressure) like whip cream. It's excellent and they are correct on how well it sticks and seals. I use it for a adhesive as well as gaskets.

Spent the past few days doing absolutely nothing, tomorrow, presidents day will be full of chores. Likely to do this then.

The Right Stuff works awesome as advertised. Instant gasket with no wait time. It's quite a bit thicker than RTV and it doesn't run. It's fantastic technology. I use the small can - like cheese wiz :)
