Moser 1 Piece Axle - Retainer Position

Hello all,

I am in the middle of a Moser single piece axle conversion on my AMC20 rear axle. Everything has gone good up until this point. Old axles out, thrust block removed, etc...

I am now preparing to build and insert my Moser axle shafts and have run into a little problem. Here is where I need your help.

When I removed the stock 2 piece axles the "retainer/seal plate" was on the inside of the brake backing plate. I.E. the retainer/seal plate was sandwiched between the backing plate and the axle tube.

Looking at the Moser assembly directions it appears I now need to put this retainer/seal plate on the outside of the brake backing plate. Can this be right? Looking at the set-up it appears that it could really go either way, the only case I can make for putting it in its original position (inside the backing plate) is to create a better seal against the Timkin bearing.

Just a side note; I did use the bearing spacer and achieved a 0.065 gap on the bearings. I only note this because I have heard of people leaving the bearing spacers out.

I installed mine just as the drawing shows. You need the backing plate to preload the bearing. If installed with retainer/seal against the bearing, if I remember the seal will rub on the bearing. Since you already set your bearing gap with the spacer you don't need the original shims. And that spacer is needed to hold the bearing in position.

2nd guessing the directions never works out good.
