I installed mine just as the drawing shows. You need the backing plate to preload the bearing. If installed with retainer/seal against the bearing, if I remember the seal will rub on the bearing. Since you already set your bearing gap with the spacer you don't need the original shims. And that spacer is needed to hold the bearing in position.
 
When ALL else fails--Follow the directions. :D
Just do it EXACTLY as the picture shows.
