Build Thread My 1971 CJ5 Build Thread
You are right. the tailgate will look great all welded up and I like it alot better than the boring flat rear.

I've seen this a couple times, and was curious as to the benefits of having the master cylinder on the frame rail? I will have to run new brake lines on mine soon. How would you access it once the tub is on? Your project looks great, and I've been following it for a little while. It's given me some ideas, and motivation to get through my frame off resto. Nice build!

I have the master cylinder mounted on the frame rail because that is the original location. I'm not sure how that can benefit anything...

Originally, the floor pan had an access panel to get to the MC...But I'm going to have enough room underneath to use a mirror to check the level.

Thanks for the support! :chug:

Mine on my 68' is on the brake booster (PO installed Power Brakes), I just assumed that was the stock location. Maybe it changed after that. I wonder if when I replace my brake lines, if it would be easier to install it on the frame?

Excuse my ingnorance on this brake thing, I think I just answered my own question after doing some research. Only manual brakes can have the MC mounted on the frame, Power Brakes needed to be mounted on the brake booster. See, I just learned something else from your build post! Thanks.

Actually, I didn't know that either. Ha :D

It all depends on clutch linkage and if you have floor mounted pedals and also engine type if its a v6 with exhaust inside rail its a no go and besides who wants to crawl under the jeep to check the fluid I was under mine enough building the darn thing

And yes hazz your coming along on that little gem looking good

what color you going ?

Thank you!

And I'll be using a General Motors' Gunmetal color. It is the same as the paint on the frame.

Pictures! Again, I didn't have my camera...So I used my Blackberry.

We trimmed the rocker panels to the radius of the wheel well. The passenger side needs a little more hammer and dolly work...No big deal though.

What our ghetto Transmission access panel looks like....We won't need that kind of accessibility, plus it's ugly...So it's getting welded up.
IMG00068-20101107-1025.jpg

Getting cleaned up for welding.
IMG00069-20101107-1238.jpg

A patch piece we made to clean looks up.
IMG00070-20101107-1359.jpg

Same piece but looking from the firewall side.
IMG00071-20101107-1359.jpg

We ran out of gas for the welder at this point....So it ended our day...
IMG00072-20101107-1424.jpg

My dad and I hope to get in the garage this week to finish the tunnel....

I have to build a tunnel in my 54 really not looking forward to it with all the different angles it needs
not real good with angles may send it out to local welder and have him do it with alum diamond plate

must say wish my welds looked that clean

Haha...Thank you!

I attended the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology in Troy Ohio a couple years back....It's a great place to learn to weld like the pros....It;s said to be the best school in the country.

Update.

The metal work is finished on the firewall. It's ready for body work.

The inside of the tub has a coat of rust converter to get it ready for primer and eventually bed liner.

Transmission access panel is welded in solid.

We added five additional tubes to the cage.

The rolled tubes were crushed when my dad attempted to roll them. He didn't have access to the correct rollers for the machine...But, as the tubes are D shaped, they are actually stronger than a round tube.

Another shot of the tailgate front/rear.

Sorry about the bad quality....The florescent lights in the garage provide terrible lighting for pictures.

heya! I love this thread.

Pictures!

After the rust converter cured, primer and a coat of paint was applied.

We added PVC tubing to raise the tub to a more desired height for body work. At ride height, the bottom of the rocker panel is approx. 27" from the floor. As it sites now, the bottom of the rocker is 30" from the floor.

My dad and I are both 6' tall.
100_0816.jpg

Masked the interior off so we dont get dust all over the still tacky paint.
100_0817.jpg

We took a DA to everything and knocked off the texture from the sand blaster. Everything is real smooth now.
