Build Thread My 1971 CJ5 Build Thread
We were told today....But they ordered the wrong supplies.....So who knows...

Hey hazzo, great build. What lift kit are running?

I'm using 2" lift springs from Pro Comp with their shocks, 1.5" shackle lift, and a 1" body lift.

Here's a little update.

My dad and I are picking the tub up from the painter's Saturday afternoon. It should be on the chassis sometime Sunday.

After we dropped the tub off, we took EVERYTHING out of the garage. All of the walls, ceiling, and floor were power washed. Every knick-knack was cleaned...My dad is done doing projects in this garage...So it's becoming a man cave. The big toolbox on casters is being used as a bar, a fold-away workbench was attached to the wall to keep space to a maximum, and a kegerator is coming.

Also, here are some pictures of my Mustang lamp. I had the engine rebuilt and stroked to a 302 a couple years ago. So my dad and I used a 14" wheel, the 289 crank, stock cam, glass pack muffler, and my 2 barrel carb and turned them into a lamp! Don't miss the bent (how they came out of the motor) push rods. It makes for a great conversation piece that doubles as a place to hang your coat. ha

** My apologies for the cell phone pictures...

Thats one awsome build. And probably the sweetest lamp I've ever seen! I'm in the process of rebuilding my CJ5 and have a question. You may have answered this if so I apoligize, remember I'm an oldguy first thing to go is the mind, why the GM steering box swap?

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave.

We decided to use the GM steering box for multiple reasons:

  • The original setup was worn out and needed replaced.
  • I'm pretty sure that the linkage for the original setup would have interfered with the fender-well headers.
  • GM parts are readily available almost anywhere and are cheap.
  • If you look at the pictures that I posted of the bumpers, you can see all of the extra material that had to be welded to the frame to mount the box. All of that is MUCH stronger and very ridged.

oh man when are we going to get to see some more pics of this thing painted.

Rumor has it that the tub will be ready to be picked up on Wednesday (01/19/2011). Pictures should be posted the following morning. :chug:

We got the Transfer Case back from the shop last night. We were going to rebuild it ourselves like we did for the Transmission , but to save time and frustration, we just had a shop do it.

We also had the shop install our twin stick kit.

Also, can anyone help me identify what these two holes are for? It's a Dana 20 .

Those 2 holes are for the detent balls. On the shift rails there are detent groves. Under the rails are balls that have a spring under there pushing the ball into the detent on the rails. This keeps the TCase in 4WD or whatever you are in. If you were to rebuild the Dana 20 the balls and springs would come out those holes when the rails are removed. Normally there are plastic plugs in those holes.

I see. Thank you for the info!
