Build Thread My lust for no rust 82 Cj-7

Build Thread My lust for no rust 82 Cj-7
Well the little red Cj finally arrived yesterday. Overall lm happy with the condition but it has a few more spots that need fixing then I originally thought.

For those of you with a keen eye you'll note the door windows are a lot clearer than the others. When it got here I had to see how clean the windows would come. This Jeep sat awhile. That same keen eye will also pick out the "wrangler" emblem on the tub. Yes it's a Yj tub and those emblems must go.

From the rear you can see that the Cj tailgate swap was done already. Unfortunately the tailgate is rotted and the hinges are seized. Looks like I have a few more body parts to source.

The previous owner also used a front bumper in the rear. I'll be getting rid of that set up when the frame gets repaired.

From the front you can see some of the signs it sat awhile. The plastic turn signal lights are brittle from the sun and there's oxidation on the hood. There's a strange sheet metal "fix" by the wiper linkage as well. The grill has some rust but looks salvageable.

In typical Cj fashion the Jeep had its first mechanical failure before getting all the way in the driveway. I never saw a cap fail quite like this but here ya go

Oh boy now the under hood shots. Let me first say this little Cj runs nice and quiet. I'm going to take it for a little longer ride this weekend but it seems pretty good drive train wise. Looks can be deceiving.

I was surprised by no pulse air emissions and an actual metal valve cover. Not a lot of vaccum lines either. Still has the crappie Carter BBD carb though.

At first I thought these seats were going to be gone immediately. Then we sat in them. Vicki and I both liked the way they felt so they'll stay till we get more seat time and better feed back.

I wouldn't drive it till ALL fluid levels are ck'd.
Good luck & have FUN. :chug:

The last pic of the day. While walking around the Cj taking the pictures and so on I'm talking to her already. Telling her I'm going to fix this and pay attention to that. I believe she was cranky from sitting so long and decided to split her distributer cap. Than after listening to me talk decided to pay me back a little. :D.

I have a feel'n you will really like those seats.
Very good pictures, BTW.:notworthy:

Yeah the only thing I checked so far is the engine oil. It's dirty but no sign of any thing bad like water. The air cleaner is horrible. The carb is loaded with gunk and there's bad vaccum line and a cap that's so deteriorated it can't be doing anything. Looks like the gaskets on the carb are leaking as well. I can't take it for much of a ride anyway cause the tank is rusted out. I have it hooked up to a 2 gallon gas can now. It did come with a brand new tank I didn't picture.

I'm only using a IPhone to take my pictures but they come out pretty good. The seats don't look very Cj-ish but we'll see.

Looks like a nice Little Red CJ7 that needs some TLC. Or should that be TLP (Tender Loving Pete). Hope you got it at a good price, should make a good Daily Driver for starters. A few more weeks and that Black top will come off I bet! :D

Great the parts list is growing already. :D

I paid more for this one than I usually would. First off the guy held it for me with no deposit for a couple months. I had also bought the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l for the Laredo from this guy. Then when I asked about buying a tow bar he offered to bring it down from Jersey with the extra engine for no additional cost. Asking price was $1900. Normally I'd have tried to get it down to $1500 but with all the contingencies I paid full price.

Since Vicki never really fell in love with the Laredo we'll see how she does with this one. She already had a 79 on 31s so when I get this one some new 32s it shouldn't be too much for her. We're going to make it a daily driver but the driver will be interchangeable. :) That makes me believe there will be a top on it all year. I'll just zip out all the windows and lose the doors when I drive. Not that Vicki won't but if there's rain in the forecast and she's driving she likes staying dry.

Now that it's here we'll figure out exactly how we want it. We've already been talking about it a lot today. I'll share that all another day.

So you buy a Cj project and decide your going to de-rustify it, that's awesome. Waiting on a bolt for the Laredo so I decide to diagnose a dead battery issue I keep having with this one. Wow is the alternator belt loose. Grab some tools and promptly break the first rusty bolt I touch.

Ok somehow that broken bolt turns into parts on the garage floor that need paint. Now this would've turned into a frame off in my driveway if I painted everything that needs paint but I contained myself.

You guys really got me going with the paint in the Laredo thread. Some of that is carrying over here. I used this method before when I had multiple Cjs so I knew what I worked on already. Alot of parts hanging out to dry:
