In the red circle, I'm looking at a Transfer Case aren't I?

So here's my problem. My brother-in-law is rebuilding the jeep for me and when he goes to put the Transfer Case in he says The parts pile I bought didn't have it.

Well as you can see from the photos I took it most certainly did.

But he tells me not to worry, he has one from a Chevy (I swear he says 408) that has a belt he just needs to get a conversion kit for $225 and new belt for $35.

So what is he up to? Is the Chevy Transfer Case any good?

Am I getting hosed and I don't realize it or did someone in his shop really just walk off with my Dana 300 and leave him some Chevy part?

I can't tell you what happened to yours but there is definitely one in the parts pic. As far as the Chevy case goes I would look for another Dana 300 . What year is that like of parts? I can find used good shape Dana 300 's locally for $100-$250 dollars. Bu using a Dana 300 you don't have to worry about the adapter, get a gear drive Transfer Case and can reuse the stock drive shaft with out shortening. Any chance he just misplaced it?

There is always a chance it was misplaced but he said he's torn the shop apart looking for it so I more suspect someone walked off with it.

The parts are from a late year 86 cj.

Is a belt driven Transfer Case any good?

What Transmission do you have?
So your brother in law is getting an adapter to mount a Chevy Transfer Case in you jeep. I'm not familiar with the 408 (that number may be wrong). Most jeep transmissions are gear driven (such as Dana 18, 20 and 300). Newer transfer cases are usually chain drive. They are good transfer cases, quieter. I prefer gear driven cases. Too bad your Dana 300 walked off. After market transfer cases for hard core use are gear driven (such as Atlas, Stak, Lovell)

Need to ask some more questions here. A Chevy trasfer case just doesn't bolt right up to a Jeep drive train. In fact it may not fit properly. It may be longer and require a different driveshaft, or shorter (although I doubt it) and require a different drive shaft. U Joints may be different. Lot of stuff to think about. Maybe you should file a police report. That might get the ball rolling.

I did that to my son in high school when he didn't bring his drum home. We went to school to look for it, and when it was nowhere to be found, I said we need to call the police to report it stolen. Well, then the story came out that we had loaned it to a friend. Kinda of knew that, and wasn't really going to call, but he didn't know that.

I'm sure it walked, too...Unfortunate, because Dana 300 's are nice.

I don't know of any Chevy 408 Transfer Case , perhaps he means a 208? That is a chain driven case, but with a slip yoke rear. So with the length of the Transfer Case , having a planetary reduction for the low side, plus the slip yoke length, plus the required adapter length (because your Dana 300 had a 23 spline input, the 208 has a 27 spline input), you'll need a longer front driveshaft, and a shorter rear...possibly even still after doing a slip yoke eliminator kit.

If it were my brother, I'd have a pair of iron fists finding information quickly....just saying.

EDIT: I suppose it is possible that if he got a new input gear for the 208, it would bolt on without an extra adapter plate...I did a po-boys conversion with my Dana 300 bolting it up to a Chevy TH350 Transmission using a 700r4-NP208 adapter...5 out of 6 bolt holes align. Who knew? And I didn't have to pay big bucks to Advance Adapters for one of their kits. I just needed to source a new input shaft. Could someone else know what I know? Possibly...

anyway, I hope you find your Transfer Case .

My Dana 300 has been found.
After I insisted I had photos of it on the Transmission more effort was put into finding it and it's happily bring returned and installed.

If I were you I would install a hidden camera to keep an eye on your stuff. That will solve the disappearing.

And then I would find another assembler. Putting a Chevy case in there is hack unless you are creating some type of exotic crawler or something.

Where was it? And I would talk to your sister a little. She should re marry if the guy seems to lose a Dana 300 .
