On my '82 Scrambler, I have put the Navajo brake kit from off again 4x4. Though I have run into some problems. The kit contains a larger master cylinder, a larger booster, and a bypass for the proportion valve. When I first installed the kit, the propoortion valve would not come off, so I left it on there, and the brake system worked perfectly. But when I finally put the bypass parts on, I lost a lot of brake power. The soft pedal I have, makes me think there is air in the brake lines, but I have bled them numerous times to no avail. I am tempted to put the proportion valvve back on, but the instructions insist thay they work best without. Why does air keep getting in my system? What is the best way to fix this. Thanks.

I know nut'n about this brake system, and have never heard of it till now.
That said-Why did you try to 'fix' something, by your own account, that wasn't 'broke'?
Can you post a link to this system for 'us' to review?

Thanks for the welcome, Lumpy. The reason I did this was, the braking felt uneven, even though they locked up quite nicely. I was also changing some damged brake lines, and other worn brake componets at the time, so I figures it would be a good opportunity . And also the man who made these kits swears up and down that these work best without the proportion valve. I might stick the proportion valve back on, but I am scared that is not the problem.

There's no hydro or air brake system in use, that does not use some sort of a P'valve.
Now you see what happens without a P'valve.
I would do a rebleed, just cause........

I just ordered a new P valve (my old one was pretty coroded.) I will install it, and tell you how it works. Thanks again.

Hope it isn't Crown or Omix brand.
PLZ keep us posted.

Rest assured, I got Mopar (possibly surplus AMC). An Omix/Crown part that fits perfecty is quite rare.

I bought one from 4WPW that was one of those two brands as I could not find one locally for my '86. I still works quite well, at least better than the oem one did after 30 years of use. I just cant understand a brake system working with out a proportioning valve as it would allow the brakes to activate all at the same time. I would think that on something like a wet surface, a short wheelbase CJ could easily get out of control:

After reading a review of that system it did get a good review though I did not see anything about ditching the prop valve:Off Again's Navajo Brakes

There is not a bleeding port for the prop valve. There is a bleeding sequence order of right rear, left rear, right front, and left front. The factory service manual states the proper procedure and calls out for a metering valve tool, but I have never used one. A Jeep CJ repair manual should state the proper procedure also. I also use one of those brake bleeder cups that you can get at an auto parts store and bleed it manually. You just want to get the air out of the system and/or replace with clean fluid.

So I just bleed the brakes, like I normally would, easy enough.
