Need AMC 20 to 1 piece axle help

Need AMC 20 to 1 piece axle help
:eek:You HAVE to use the spacer, that is what sets the preload on the bearing. Right now you have nothing holding your bearing race from sliding off the bearing.:eek::eek:
That is why you have to check and set the depth of the bearing by adjusting the lenght of the spacer. :)

Try to get the bearings back that they pressed on wrong. You can use them to set the spacers, other weise you will have to buy more bearings.:(

^^^ read #2 ^^^

........... so I called Superior (888 522-2953) and told Joel about the lack of space with the spacer in the tube. After a little discussion, Joel suggested that if I turned the spacer around and installed it the correct way, low shoulder against the oil seal, thick shoulder against the bearing face, the hub would probably snug up without a gap and without binding.

I did, and it did. I can spin the hub with one finger, although you can tell that everything inside the bearing space on both axles are a close fit.

Reminds me of a trip with my Dad, after he spent all Friday rebuilding a '41 Plymouth straight six, bored 30 thousandths over, with new rings and new crankshaft bearings. We took off about 7PM for an eight hour run to Northeastern Arkansas. After 20 minutes, the engine got hot and stalled. Dad and I pushed, Mom steering, until it cooled down and would run. 30 minutes later, again, same thing. We pushed and drove, drove and pushed, all night until well after sunup. But when the engine finally broke in, it would run like the dickens and lasted many. many years.

Hope these Jeep bearings work out the same.

Great story but what the :censored: is a "pinkieens"?.. Sounds like they must run good though whatever they are. :chug:

A "pinkieens" is a tired, dirty, greasy Jeep mechanic trying to spell "dickens" without getting the keyboard blotched with graphite anti-seize.

I didn't use the steel spacer between the axle shaft oil seal and the inside bearing keeper;
Dont mean to just jmp in here with my issues but this thread seems to putain to my current issue. The spacer on my one piece axle is busted(Unsure of brand of axle or spacer) When Im trying to look up the part, very few show the length of the spacer. It makes me think its kind of a standard size thing. The one that did specify: ( SPACER 1-PIECE AXLE AMC 20 | Part# H1011 ) says 1 inch. The busted one on my 84 cj AMC20 measures .654 . Is this a case of "Just because you found it that way doesnt mean its right" or am I just looking at the wrong spacer here? Also can anyone recomend a reputal place to order the correct part?

The spacers usually come a little long and have to be fitted, either ground down or shimed, to set the bearing preload. I just checked a spare set I have and the spacer looked to be about 5/8" with a tape measure. 1 inch would be way to long.
