I AM A TOTAL NEWBIE TO JEEPS. BUT NOT TO VEHICLE RESTORATION - 69 CAMARO.

SO ANY TECH TIPS OR IDEAS WILL ALWAYS BE APPRECIATED!
I have a 1980 CJ5 4sp, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l straight 6 that seems to have transfer/Transmission /something in that general area ISSUES. I live in Otter Rock, OR (just north of Newport) and really need somebody who ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT THE HECK THEY ARE DOING, have a look, listen, feel,.. at my Jeep. I have been bull$^&$@, ripped off and lied to more times than I will admit. And all of them have been Wrong. If anyone out there is HONEST and has the skills and the time or even knows somebody that does... I NEED A DIAGNOSIS. I need to know EXACTLY WHAT'S WRONG! Not guesses or theories. If you aren't too far away, couple hours tops, I will cover your gas (of course) and pay you for your time. I'm a Park Ranger on the coast so I don't have a lot to spend. I think if I knew what to fix, that I could figure out how to do it, manuals, youtube internet... I haven't been able to drive it since January and now I'm missing the summer. aghhhh. Maybe there is something you collect like antiques, tools, books etc.. that we could do some trading. This is beyond my skill set to deal with. I LOVE MY JEEP!!! Not being able to fix or drive it REALLY SUCKS! My email: kimcensus@gmail.com. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS, I DO APPRECIATE IT A GREAT DEAL. Kim

Hey fellas..... Do you know anybody that has actually worked on jeeps, I'm at a loss, I'm not sure that anybody here has actual hands on jeep experience........ Except for maybe 75% - 100% of us here....... I know your Transmission case says T-98 , but it's not. The T-98 is a 1960's Transmission , the T-18 uses the same casting. Can you tell us what your problem is? Don't be afraid to start "wide", don't get frustrated, answer the questions as they are asked and we will narrow you down to the answer you need. These old jeeps with their old technology there is no real magic, they are fairly straight forward.

Now that you feel better.....

What's the problem(s) with the Jeep ?

Is it possible to upload a 3 minute 20 second avi video? It's 265,201 kb. I ran across it on the internet a while back, and the noise that this guys jeep is making is real similar.

Kim, as HH stated, the T-98 is not OEM for your Jeep. If it indeed is a T-98 , some PO put it in there. Which brand adapter/output shaft was used to mate it to the Transfer Case ? Does it have the right clutch assembly? Factory single stick or twin stick for Transfer Case ? Who told you it was a T-98 ? How do you know it has a Weber carb? Dana 44 rear diff? If you have all these things, someone else put them there. What was this persons skill level? How deep were their pockets? Did Bubba work on it? For us to begin to help you from our keyboards, we need alot more background info from you about your rig. Some pictures of the drivetrain may help some, as would video/audio .

You have come across CJ owners with some of the best knowledge on the internet right here.

Just take your best shot at discribing the problem. Make sure you include whether it happens cold or hot or both, clutch in or out, in gear or out of gear, forward or reverse or both, the type of noise, metalic, grinding, whining, high pitch low pitch or both, does it pop out of gear or hard to get into gear etc. Is there vibration with the problem? Just describe what you are experiencing. Diagnosing a problem is not always straight forward, or there is always the chance this is a uncommon thing. I know it's frustrating, but no one can help you here if you don't attempt at discribing the problem. There is always the chance it could be a simple solution you can fix yourself. Give it your best shot.

yup! Let's hear the issue.

:ww:

And yes, you can either link it (copy and paste link from where you found it) or upload it to a utube account and post a link to that.

If it's already on the "internet" easiest just to link where you found it (if you remember).

As far as the T-98 thing goes - read here - good knowledge:

The Novak Guide to the Borg-Warner T98 Transmission

Specifically the section on identification:

Novak Adapters said:
The T-98 's progeny, the T-18 , used the same top cover as the T-98 up through 1979. Many individuals assume they have found a T-98 upon seeing the "T-98 " cast into the top cover, when in fact, it is a T-18 .
The only way to rule T-98 out from being a T-18 is to open the top cover and count gear teeth. The T-98 will have a 43 tooth first-reverse sliding gear (the rearmost mainshaft gear, spur cut) and a 17 tooth cluster gear (also spur cut).
The T-98 's mainshaft features a smaller pilot tip than the T-18 and has needle roller bearings under second gear.
Jeep T-98 's may feature a casting code of 1301-174-6117. Some may have a T-18 -1P WG Division cast into them.

I know the Transmission may not even be your issue, and we're harping on it a bit, but it's important to know for sure what you have for diagnosis accuracy ;)

Another helpful bit of info is on the Jeep itself. Has it been in an accident? Rolled, jumped, high centered, hit a large chug hole? What are the maintanence records like since you have had it? When did the problem start? Did it come on gradual or all at once? One would indicate wear problems where another would indicate an incident that is resulting in the problem. This could help pinpoint an area.

Looking forward to seeing this video. :notworthy:
OP-PLEASE describe what the issues are, that you want us to help you with.
Also-Are there any jeep clubs in your area you could turn to?

I apologize for not getting back to you all immediately. I'm now working 2 full time jobs in order to save money for my jeep repairs. I will write up a detailed account of everything this weekend. Po lied about a great many things.. Almost everything he said.
The rear end is not stock. The weber carb is exactly that a "weber carb". I got to be pretty good friends with bud pauge at redline weber in calif, troubleshooting. I trust in his knowledge.
The angles of the drivelines are too extreme.
The problem came on gradually. Starting with a faint low pitched howl or whine that was sorta similar to a tire howl (off road tires on the hwy sound). At that point a "jeep expert" told me it 'was' the tires and that i was a jeepachondriac. Wrong. I have tons of pics of, well, everything pretty much. So thank you for your continued interest and insight and ill be back this weekend.
