Never saw a hub like this before.

I've driven several brands of 4x4s, but I've never before seen a hub like this. It's on my "new" '73 CJ5 . Is it an aftermarket orphan--y'know, one that never caught on?

No that is the old style hubs that came factory.

That is actually a great hub........made by "Cutlass" about 1970 vintage.
As strong as any Warn hub but as is the case with Warn if you needed parts I doubt you will find them.
Here is a neat trick with that hub..............that knob is spring loaded, you can roll that knob over to 4 wheel drive before you leave the house, it will remain free until you engage the Transfer Case and put power to the front axle. Once your done 4 wheeling you still have to manually disengage them...........never seen one brake, I still have a set here.

I have them on mine as well. I posted about them a while back. I was thinking about replacing them with Warn hubs until everyone told me how good they were.

Really, my '73 CJ5 that I bought new didn't come with free-wheel hubs.Just the standard flange hub. The "Cutlas hubs" where available as where many other brands on the aftermarket.So I am assuming you mean dealer installed option.

Some early CJ's may have had the earlier style 2 lever Cutlass hubs, not like the ones pictured............I have these pictured on my 1965 CJ that I bought new in 67 but they did not come on the vechile.........I bought these some time later to replace the others....................I mentioned 1970 vintage but this sheet clearly shows an earlier date.................. like most good American manufactured Items I think they went Belly-Up! Still a good hub.

Don't take what I said the wrong way.I just don't remember any paticular hub as "factory" equipment.Did jeep actually have options? My '73 CJ5 was a base model AMC 232 i6 I-6 T-14 4:27 gears open diff. no top,no rear seat.no roll bar,no hubs,etc.It had a spare tire ,that was it.$3,AMC 150 .00.Had a few friends but 1969 and 1970 models with simiular eqiup.I guess you could have bought a Renegade with some options. Idid do some research online (and we all know what that is worth) and nobody mentioned factory hubs.BTW mtnwhlr from your info you would have been about 17 in 1973.If you were look'in at a pair of hubs they probably weren't on a jeep. mike
