So I got my new AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l installed and running and as soon as I fired it up I heard a really loud ticking coming from it sounded like the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the head. After doing some research on it I read that there should be 2 gaskets there one paper and a rubber type for the intake. When I took my manifolds off my original motor it only had one the solid one piece. So my question is am I suppose to have 2 gaskets or just 1? If just 1 then how else can I fix my exhaust leak? By the way I have the exhaust and intake that bolt together not separate ones if that helps!

I've seen a one gasket setup for sale somewhere, but yes you should have two. The exhaust gasket is a large gasket made of partial metal material. It runs the entire length of the block. On top of this is either a paper or rubber gasket that seals the intake manifold. Both of these are used dry with no added silicone. Usually the are one time use only. So if you have a leak, and tightening the bolts to spec does not stop it. You will need a new gasket set. Below is a picture of what you will need. Rod

Thanks rod when I get home from work in a couple days I will get one and try putting that on and see if that stops my leak. I do know that the noise if so annoying especially when u are cruising at 55 down the road!

I just recently purchased a Dorman Exhaust Manifold and the gasket set like Peanut Butter showed in his post. With the packing papers for the manifold there was a notice that the manufacturer does not recommend the use of a gasket with the exhaust manifold. I plan to use one anyway.
