i need a new exhaust for my CJ5 so i can get it on the road. i have a 360 with an automatic Transmission . i was going to get a front pipe for a cj with a AMC 304 , but it is not listed anywhere. my question is, would a front pipe from a wagoneer fit between the frame rails? will a factory AMC 304 front pipe fit a 360 engine? will a dual exhaust from the factory manifolds work best? there dosent seem to be a lot of room for a tail pipe on the passenger side. im looking for tips, suggestions, part numbers, links ect on this subject.

I would just take it to a good exhaust shop and they should be able to do what ever you want for an exhaust. IMA

Depending on the type of wheeling you do, a set of fenderwell headers is probably the best route. You can get a decent set of hedman headers for 180 from summit. Toss some muffs on there and you're done. Some people don't like fenderwell headers because they smash their mufflers on rocks.

Headers suck, I really don't like mine but I suppose it depends some on the brand you buy.. mine were from summit, I went inside the frame rails and had an exhaust shop build the dual pipes right out the back. I have a CJ7 with the auto and a q-trac and there was plenty of room for 2-1/2" duals. Most anyone else that's had headers has gone back to stock manifolds with dual pipes, but it's whatever you like.

i agree, headers do suck. they always have leaks. i have factory manifolds right now, and i want to keep them. i was wondering if a y pipe from a different vehicle would work. i cant find a y pipe for a cj with a AMC 304 , and if i did im not sure it would work on the 360 i have in there now. i can go duals out the back, but i dont want exhaust in the cab. just looking for ideas

Well..... there's really no such thing as "no exhaust in the cab", at least I'm pretty sure about about that.. my tailpipes dump below the back bumper, and I always smell exhaust (unless my top is on).

if i exit the pipes out the side that should negate the fumes in the cab correct? or if i turn them down in front of the rear axle, would that do it too?

From what I've read, side dump exhaust fumes are far worse than rear exit fumes... one of the reasons I went out the back with mine.

X10 !

"headers suck".. IMHO (and Niedhogg's as well)
Had headers for about 20 years on my Jeep. Hassles from the start till the end. I found a set of stock manifolds and couldnt be happier. Wanted to run duals but instead had the guy do a crossover pipe and go 2 into 1 and out the drivers side rear quarter behind the tire. Niedhogg and I have the same Jeep, but I had a little less room in the rear because of a larger tank.

I personally believe that "header sound" is poopie. Mufflers are going to determine the sound more than a set of headers will. And the HP gains manufacturers claim are negligable. Trying to squeeze every last HP from a rat engine on the track? Yes, go with them.. But a few extra HP in our Jeeps wont be noticed ... again IMHO..

guess I'm the wrong guy to ask since I just put a 500hp engine in my jeep so big headers were a must. I hear you on the leaks, but for once I actually don't have any right off the bat.

Manifolds is def. the easiest way to go. Having a shop run some pipe out the back shouldn't be more than a couple hundred bucks.

going to a custom shop is the most logical solution, IF there was one local. lou's custom exhaust was in fitchburg, about 7 miles from me, but they have closed down. i might just weld up my own i guess. ive repaired a few exhausts in the past, im sure i could twist one up for the jeep. ill keep you posted on what i do.

Ya if you've got a welder and a chop saw or cut off wheel on a grinder you can knock it our yourself for cheap. If you aren't going for high hp and needing mandrel bends I've noticed that Autozone/NAPA/O reilly all have up to 2 1/2" pipes pre bent and flared so you can slip them on.

500 HP in a Jeep  I hope you don't kill yourself.

as long as the axle doesn't come off I should be fine. It actually handles nicely and reacts very predictably while spinning the tires on pavement.

408 is a nice motor. ford should have built these factory.

My first one and I'm impressed. Revs quicker than all my built 302s/331 combos.

Sorry we jacked the thread:(:(

i started the thread, so its ok. i might need to build one of these for my bronco

ah ok...didnt realize that.

I went a little overboard but I bet you could do a real nice one for 5k. Might not get a roller cam one for that but thats not that big a deal.

One piece of advice is if you are going to splurge on alum heads; get some Vic Jrs. For the same priced AFR head they perform much better; and thats coming from a pro race engine builder that did my short block. I'm running a huge cam and it pulls hard right from idle too.
